<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Humans have always been and still are fascinated by the elusive phenomenon of soul and have devised various approaches to interpret it and attribute different names to it; depending on which part, which religion, which tribe and which sect of the world they belong to. Theologians to philosophers to spiritual thinkers to literary authors and critics to scientists—all seem to be researching and explaining its nature and place in the universal scheme of things. Interestingly, there is a unanimity among all, regarding the eternity and indestructibility of soul. The ancient Hindu scripture, <italic>Bhagavad Gita</italic> establishes soul (<italic>Jivatma</italic>) as a triad of Self, Nature (<italic>Prakriti</italic>: material reality) and God (<italic>Parmeshvara</italic>). The inner self is Soul which bears reflections of both, the physical nature and God. Malleable in ignorance, it identifies with the sense-perception dominated body but once realising its true nature, it is capable of governing the body and its actions. With the support mechanisms and persistence, it traverses across individual body consciousness to universal consciousness. This article strives to make a hermeneutic study of this metaphysical text; inquiring how awareness of the duality of nature; transient and permanent, triggers a gradual process of evolution, leading to a complete transformation when a soul resides within a body as a unifying factor; not for exploiting it or others or vice versa but for bringing about universal harmony.</abstract>

Having spent many years engaging with Christian claims about miracles, especially the purported resurrection of Jesus, I now shift attention to Islamic miracle claims, the most striking of which seems to me to be Muhammad’s alleged splitting of the moon. I explain, in a Bayesian fashion, why this almost certainly did not happen.

Doubting the Quran, the Hadith, and Muhammad’s Splitting of the Moon: A Probabilistic Refutation of One of Islam’s Most Striking Miraculous Claims

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title> I argue that the bishop of Hippo taught sola fide, declarative justification, and the divine acceptance of sinners based on faith alone although he presented these pre-Reformational thoughts with strong emphasis on the necessity of growth in holiness (sanctification). Victorinus and Ambrosiaster already taught a Reformational doctrine of justification prior to Augustine in the fourthcentury Latin Christianity. Therefore, the argument that sola fide and justification as an event did not exist before the sixteenth-century Reformation, and these thoughts were foreign to Augustine is not tenable. For Augustine, justification includes imputed righteousness by Christ’s work, which can be appreciated by faith alone and inherent righteousness assisted by the Holy Spirit at the same time of forgiveness in justification. Nonetheless, the sole ground of the divine acceptance does not depend on inherent righteousness, which is real and to increase. The salvation of the confessing thief and the remaining sinfulness of humanity after justification show Augustine that faith alone is the ground of God’s acceptance of sinners. Augustine’s relatively less frequent discussion of sola fide and declarative justification may be due to his need to reject the antinomian abusers who appealed to the Pauline understanding of justification even when they do not have any intentional commitment to holiness after their confessions. Augustine’s teaching on double righteousness shows considerable theological affinity with Bucer and Calvin who are accustomed to speak of justification in terms of double righteousness. Following Augustine, both Bucer and Calvin speak of the inseparability and simultaneity of justification and sanctification. Like Augustine, Bucer also maintains a conceptual, not categorical, distinction between the two graces of God in their doctrines of justification.</abstract>

This study casts light on how the issue of childlessness is portrayed in the Bible. The discussion begins with a commentary on Michal’s story, which provides the foundation for further reflection on how childlessness was dealt with in the biblical world, especially in the situations where no miraculous divine solutions were provided. Several humanly devised solutions, acceptable and practiced in the ancient world are presented. The last part of the paper focuses on the more eschatological view of human existence provided in the New Testament, showing that childlessness is a form of suffering included in the promise of redemption brought about by the inauguration of God’s kingdom. As such the response of the redeemed community is to be characterized by love and compassion.

<abstract xml:lang="en"><title style='display:none'>Calvin's Doctrine of the Lord's Supper</title>In order to pinpoint its proprium, it is necessary to understand John Calvin’s Eucharistic
theology within the wider context of the intra-Protestant debates of his time. As a second-
generation Reformer, Calvin developed his ideas explicitly in reaction to and as a middle
way between the Lutheran and Swiss Reformed discussions of the 1520’s. To that end this essay
first focuses on the main developments from the Middle Ages onwards, and then presents
Calvin from the perspective of the positions taken up by some of his contemporaries, in particular
Philipp Melanchthon. Next, some representative texts written by Calvin himself are analysed.
Although Calvin’s Eucharistic views were not from the beginning a coherent and unified
doctrine but developed only gradually, they may be described in a systematic-synthetic way.
With respect to the matter of closed, open, and frequent communion, it is observed that for
Calvin a regular celebration is essential to the deepening of the believer’s union with Christ.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>From an early age Jonathan Edwards became intellectually equipped for the task of defining theology of the revival movements of North America. As a revivalist Edwards came from a Calvinistic theological tradition and moved along the plane of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Puritan theology. Through his studies and meditations on God’s Word Edwards realised that the great need of his time was for a change in the way the old doctrine of sovereignty needed to be understood. The realisation of this fact led him to produce an explicitly and consistently Calvinistic theology of revival. For Edwards revival times represented unusual and extraordinary times. In his eyes, revival is a glorious and wonderful working of God when the Spirit of God is poured out in a far greater and more glorious measure.</abstract>

Autobiographical memory is a complex blend of memories of single, recurring, and extended events integrated into a coherent story of self, that is created and evaluated through sociocultural practices. These memories once integrated are recalled/retrieved through distinctive cues (different cues inducing different memories), both voluntarily and involuntarily. Yaa Gyasi is a young American novelist of African descent and her novel <italic>Homegoing</italic> (2016) is a story of history, colonialism, separation, migration, slavery, inter and intra-personal relations, and conflicts. Memory therefore is a dominant occurrence in Gyasi’s works. This paper analyses the use and allusion of five primary senses and their role as distinctive cues inducing distinct memories for the characters throughout the course of the novel. The study highlights how this usage helps Gyasi shape her characters and their characteristics connecting many small tales into one large narration. The paper also enquires how recalling and practicing other cues, mainly socio-cultural and religious, helps in forming and strengthening relations between similar groups of people in faraway lands through their shared collective memory.

Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel <italic>The Remains of the Day</italic> delves into the intricacies of memory, self-deception, and denial through the lens of its protagonist, Stevens, a devoted butler. This article meticulously examines the interplay of these themes within the novel, elucidating their profound impact on Stevens’ identity and worldview. By meticulously dissecting Ishiguro’s narrative, the paper elucidates how memory functions as a tool for constructing personal narratives, particularly evident in Stevens’ selective recollection of events to maintain his idealized butler persona. Furthermore, it explores Stevens’ unwavering commitment to duty, which leads to his blindness towards his employer’s moral failings and the subsequent isolation and regret he faces. Through a comprehensive analysis, this paper argues that Stevens’ self-deception and denial emanate from a quest for dignity and purpose, underscoring Ishiguro’s critique of sacrificing integrity for societal conformity. Moreover, it elucidates how Ishiguro’s exploration resonates with broader philosophical discourse on memory, identity, and ethical considerations, accentuating the imperative of acknowledging past errors for individual growth and societal advancement.

Memory, Self-Deception and Denial in Kazuo Ishiguro’s <italic>the Remains of the Day</italic>

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This paper examines the role of women in Nazi Germany and ways the policy and propaganda implemented and enacted both plans an policies to transform women into the mothers of the nation. The paper will focus on the ways propaganda posters were used in order to engage public opinion, using the power of visual arts into manipulating public opinion that the body of a woman should be devoted to the Reich, (re-)producing the pure-blooded German and support the creation of a new empire. The posters supported and acted as a direct reminder of the policies set by Nazi regime, and their ideology on family planning, racial purity and gender roles. The propaganda machine that produced them borrowed symbols from religious works of the Renaissance connecting the “ideal mother” to images of Holy Mary, in a twisted connection between religion and social engineering. The presentation will discuss about the ways Nazi Germany elaborated the role of women, the (ab)use of their body and the ideal depiction of it according to the regime, the distortion of iconic renaissance paintings along with the ways that religion and public policy have been weaved in order to manipulate and re-educate an entire nation will be parts of the presentation in order to highlight this interesting part of history.

The Image of the Ideal German Mother in Nazi Era Posters

<abstract>
<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
In this paper, I will draw on two twentieth-century French writers and extract from their works their ideas about memory and memoir writing. The first, the poet and philosopher Charles Péguy wrote a great deal about memory, bringing the philosophy of Henri Bergson into realms of daily life that the philosopher himself did not. Not all of Péguy’s meditations on memory are related to memoir writings, and yet they provide a possible frame for anyone who would want to engage in such a task. I will focus on some of his points about time and aging, give some examples from his projected confessions, and relate them to the writing of memoirs as he saw it. The second author, Romain Gary was a prolific novelist, whose works were among the greatest best sellers in post-War France. I will focus on his literary memoir, <italic>Promise at Dawn</italic>. Gary does not write directly about memoir writing. His ideas on it are embedded in his autobiographical narration, however, and it is these ideas that I shall extract and illustrate. Much separates these two authors’ views on memory and memoirs. Despite their differences, I would like to argue that both authors focus on the ethics of memory and memory writing. That ethics revolves not so much on telling the literal truth, the getting this or that detail correctly, but in capturing and conveying the commitments that have marked one’s life, and capturing them in such a way that they do not coincide with the current pieties about the past. Memoir writing for both authors is a way of responding to the times, a kind of critique of contemporary society.

The Ethics of Memory and Memoir Writing. Charles Péguy and Romain Gary

<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
This paper proposes an insight into the emergence of key concepts in modern narratives, especially related to time and memory in the literature of Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka. Knowing that 20th-century prose draws its novelty from its style and writing technique, we will thus argue that one needs to first inquire as to what modern literature entails before scrutinizing such complex and abstract ideas. Thus, the first part of this study is the <italic>mise-en-sc</italic><italic>è</italic><italic>ne</italic> for later projections on memory as four-dimmensional time in Proust and metaphysical time in Kafka’s work, while in itself it defines, exemplifies, and analyzes the evocation technique that leads to this complementing view of time in these two writers. Coupled with inquiries into the great social and political panorama rendered by war and seconded by the shifts in narrative themes and topics, the props of Modernism are explored. Time and memory are themes that we will debate on while providing a view on the new prosodic procedures such as the abandonment of the linear narrative flow, the breaking up with conventional ideas of unity and coherence of the plot and characters, and the encouragement of ironic and ambiguous juxtapositions that challenge the action’s traditional moral and philosophical meaning.

Is Memory Just a Technical Tool in Modern Fiction? A Look Into the Growth of Time and Memory in Proust and Kafka

<abstract>
<title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>
In this article, we propose a reading of Victoria Hislop’s <italic>Maria</italic><italic>’</italic><italic>s Island</italic> through the lens of the medical humanities. The novel belongs to the literary genre of children’s literature and, thus, is meant to be read by children. However, its strong meanings make it an interesting read for the adult reader, as well as the scholar in the fields of literary studies, the medical humanities and medicine. The plot unfolds in the small Greek villages of Plaka and Spinalonga (in Crete) and revolves around a leprosy epidemic. As we are going to see, the locals viewed the disease as a “curse” and a “social stigma,” and not as a medical condition. After a historical account of the disease, its “shame” and “stigma,” we proceed with a detailed analysis of the novel and explain how these notions are manifested. We also analyse how Maria, Anna and Doctor Nikos Kyritsis (three key characters in the story) represent different values and perspectives. On the one hand, Anna reflects the mentality of a conservative society and the view that leprosy carries a social stigma. On the other hand, Maria and Nikos believe that leprosy should be seen like any other disease that needs treatment, and that the leprosy patient is not a “stigmatised” or a “cursed individual.” Maria and Nikos represent the medical community in the novel, as Maria becomes a nurse and Nikos is already a Doctor, and show how medicine, compassion and a feeling of understanding create a safe and secure environment for the patient. Memory and flashback are key elements in the story, as Maria, the main character of the novel, explains to her granddaughter what happened in her village many years ago.

Leprosy and Stigma in Hislop’s <italic>Maria</italic><italic>’</italic><italic>s Island</italic>

The syntax of 2 John 1: 5 is problematic. Six manuscripts, Ψ 5. 81. 642*. 1852 l, try to solve this difficulty by emending the participle ‘γράφων’ to the indicative verb ‘γράφω’. Culy and Leedy on Greek NT diagrams, on the other hand, understand the participle ‘γράφων’ to modify ‘ἐρωτάω’. In the latter approach, the participle ‘γράφων’ serves to modify ‘εἴχομεν’. This last approach, however, is divided into two possibilities: either it functions as a participle of condition or of attendant circumstance. Three English Bibles use a participle of condition (Holman Christian Standard Bible, NET Bible, and Christian Standard Bible). The other English translations, however, employ the function of attendant circumstance participle. Despite these syntactical discrepancies, this research offers a fresh reading of the puzzled syntax of 2 John 1: 5.

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>The study is a response to the call for papers on African issues and discusses the notion of leadership in the Zimbabwean context. Based on material drawn through an interdisciplinary research process, this article argues that the phenomenon of fear emanating from a Zimbabwean religio-culture cuts across the country’s socio-political structures and affects its different forms of leadership. Therefore, by drawing on primary and secondary as well as literary and non-literary, sources, the article examines how and why religio-culture and especially its elements, such as the phenomenon of fear, continue to influence the people’s understanding of leadership. The quest for a cross-cultural perspective leads to the consideration of both African and non-African scholarly views. In order to draw on concrete data, I focus on the perceptions and experiences of ordinary citizens whether professionals or non-professionals. Furthermore, the study considers arguments and propositions from disciplines such as history, political science, religious studies, anthropology, and African philosophy, among others.</abstract>

Religio-Culture, Fear, and Zimbabwe’s Leadership Perceptions

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>The beatific vision is widely perceived as a Roman Catholic doctrine. Many continue to view deification as a distinctively Eastern Orthodox doctrine incompatible with the Western theological tradition, especially its Protestant expressions. This essay will demonstrate that several Reformers of the first and second generation promoted a vision of redemption that culminates with deification and beatific vision. They affirmed these concepts without apology in confessional statements, dogmatic works, biblical commentaries, and polemical treatises. Attention will focus on figures in the Reformed tradition though one could produce similar surveys for the Lutheran and Anglican branches of the Reformation as well. John Calvin will receive extended treatment because some scholars dispute whether he affirmed deification. This essay presents important evidence thus far overlooked which should settle the question.</abstract>

Recovering the Reformation’s Ecumenical Vision of Redemption as Deification and Beatific Vision

<abstract xml:lang="en"><title style='display:none'>The Use and Abuse of John Calvin in Richard Hooker's Defence of the English Church</title>At times Richard Hooker (1554-1600), as an apologist for the Church of England,
has been treated as “on the Calvinist side”, at others as an “anti-Calvinist”. In fact, Hooker and
his Church were dependent on John Calvin in some ways and independent in others. Hooker
used recognized sources to paint a picture of Calvin and his reforms in Geneva that would
negatively characterize the proposals and behaviour of those he opposed in the Church of
England, and yet he adopted Calvinist positions on several topics. A judicious treatment of
Hooker’s attitude to John Calvin requires careful reading, and an understanding of the polemical
use of the portrait of Calvin. Calvin was indeed grave and learned, but he was human and,
as an authority, inferior to the Church Fathers, who were formally recognized as authorities in
the Church of England.</abstract>

The Use and Abuse of John Calvin in Richard Hooker's Defence of the English Church

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This paper discusses the complex relationship of Reformed confessions and Reformed orthodox scholasticism. It is argued that Reformed confessions differ in genre and method from Reformed scholastic works, although such differences between confessional and scholastic language should not be mistaken for representing different doctrines that are no longer in harmony with each other. What is more, it is precisely the scholastic background and training of the authors of such confessions that enabled them to place their confessional writings in the broader catholic tradition of the Christian church and to include patristic and medieval theological insights. Thus proper attention to their scholastic background helps to see that at least in some confessions the doctrine of predestination, for instance, is not as ‘rigid’ as one might think at first sight. In order to demonstrate that the doctrine of the Reformed confessions was much in line with the scholastic theology of Reformed orthodoxy, this paper discusses, after having explained the terms ‘Reformed orthodoxy’ and ‘scholasticism’, the early Reformed scholastic theologians Beza, Zanchi, and Ursinus, who also have written confessional texts. The paper also includes a more detailed discussion of the <italic>Belgic Confession</italic> and the scholastic background of the Canons of Dordt and the <italic>Westminster Confession</italic>, thereby focusing on the doctrines of God, providence, and predestination.</abstract>
