The aim of the present article is to provide a comparative analysis between two important works of German and Hungarian literature on the background of the theory of Carl Gustav Jung’s theory of archetypes. Both works (the novel <italic>Demian</italic> by Hermann Hesse and the drama <italic>Erstwhile Solace</italic> [<italic>Ősvigasztalás</italic>] by Áron Tamási) approach the theme of the search for identity as well as for the absolute and the divinity, with the focus on the archetypes of the collective unconscious. Motifs such as androgyny, shadow or dream, the issue of polarity and unity form common points of contact between the two analysed literary works.

Information about culture and civilization has always been an integrated part of the courses for German as a foreign language. In the past few decades were developed several theoretical approaches regarding that aspect, for example the cognitive, the communicative or the inter-cultural approach. In course books and learning materials the culture and civilization component is most of the times related with the linguistic component, but recently, influenced by the development of the field of cultural studies, the cultural discourse has also become a priority. In the following article my aim is to depict to what extent this paradigm shift on a theoretical level is being reflected in learning materials. While the first part of the article is dedicated to the theoretical aspect, in the second part I intend to analyze examples of exercises and worksheets with regard to the educational objective.

Herta Müller has written several volumes of postcards, describing the work on the collages as a “relaxation exercise” from the laborious epic work. Her collage work is heterogeneous, works with the principle of chance, deals with clippings. The author tries o writing with scissors that can be positioned somewhere between literature and the fine arts. The volume <italic>Father Telephones with the Flies</italic> enables a political reading in which an I speaks about his traumas during the dictatorship, about interrogations, shadows and also includes the family sphere. Image and writing complement each other.

The article deals with the promotion of the German language abroad through Germany’s foreign cultural and educational policy. An important concern of the German intermediary organizations abroad is access to culture and education across geographic, political and social borders, but scientific and economic policy. interests, which benefit the needs of the German market, also play a major role. Regarding the fact that more and more skilled workers who are ultimately lacking in their countries of origin are migrating to Germany, the article questions whether it is always a so-called triple-win model.

Olga Grjasnowa’s debut novel The Russian Is One Who Loves Birch Trees, revolving around themes such as national and linguistic boundaries, borderline transgressions and border crossings, the sense of home and the sense of alienation and the search for one’s own identity in the face of a life in the threshold of cultures. Using the example of a young woman who has emigrated from Azerbaijan, who was traumatized as a child, and who is trained as an interpreter in Germany, the article explores subjects such as loneliness, identity, limitations and hunger for language. By making interpreting her profession, the figure solidifies the leap from one culture to the next as a pattern of action and acts transculturally between different spaces. She finds access to marginalized groups, she has ambivalent erotic experiences with men as well as with women, which reflects her cultural indecision.

Across different cultures in the world, companies recruit new workers by publishing job announcement in newspapers. This contribution examines job announcement in German and Cameroonians newspapers in order to bring out theirs similarities and differences. The analysis reveals that job announcements in both countries are quite similar as far as the communication situation is concerned. Differences and similarities appear in text structure and in the usage of linguistic items.

The German newspaper in Romania Neuer Weg, whose first issue appeared on March 13, 1949, was addressed to the German-language readership and was at the same time a propaganda tool of the Romanian Communist Party. The overall aim of the whole press of that time was to support the social, political, economic and cultural changes that the first years of the so-called popular democratic construction brought. For this reason, the present work intends to analyse the features of the communist discourse in the press, examining the socialist use of language and highlighting the linguistic peculiarities.
The author takes the standpoint of pragma linguistics in the study and evaluation of the linguistic data and starts from the concept of the so-called wooden language.

The articl intends to present some facts about the medieval history of the Saxons in the Wallachian town of Câmpulung Muscel/Langenau. German-speaking colonists were settled in Langenau around the 13th century, and their traces can be followed until the middle of the 18th century. A German language document from the 16th century will serve as an illustration, depicting the relations between the Transylvanian Saxons from Râșnov/Rosenau and the population of Câmpulung Muscel/Langenau. The linguistic peculiarities of the document are discussed, as well as the problems of its transcription, which led to different publication variants. This document is also interesting because it contains many Romanian names of persons.

The <italic>Chess Story</italic>, written at the end of 1941, is considered internationally to be Stefan Zweig‘s greatest success. At the center of the novella is undoubtedly Dr. B. He comes from a distinguished Austrian family, was the head of a law firm in Vienna, which advised monasteries and part of the imperial family in property matters. When the Nazi occupation of Austria was imminent, the activity became dangerous. A day before Hitler invaded Austria, he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in the Hotel Metropole. The isolation and monotony wore him down. Shortly before a new interrogation is scheduled, Dr. B. discovers a book with a collection of one hundred and fifty chess games. To escape the threat of nothingness, he plays chess games blind. Playing chess is not understood by Dr. B. as a mere pastime, but as meaning; it has an existential significance.

The game, with its creative potential and rich semantics, has repeatedly animated writers’ imagination, motivating them to imagine new worlds or to present the experience of the existent world according to other rules. Beyond this, games have been perceived as a form of transposing traumatic experiences or an expression of heteronomy in man’s relation with destiny. The dice game appears in Paul Celan’s early poetry, but it is more present in late poems. The present paper analyses the semantics of the dice game in Celan’s poetry, trying to evidentiate its ontological and poetical values.

Using the example of the village novel <italic>Three Kilometers</italic> from the final phase of the Ceaușescu dictatorship, the article follows the discovery of memory, examining the image of the Banat village community, which is dominated by hopelessness, fear and thoughts of flight. The emptiness and the cold motif used at the end point to the dissolution of the Swabian village world. The Banat village is presented at the interface between real life reality and a landscape of memories.

My paper will explore the interrelation between past, present and identity, as well as the dynamics of social change in contemporary German and Romanian literature, as exemplified by Jana Hensel’s <italic>Zonenkinder</italic> (2002) and Ioana Bradea’s <italic>Scotch</italic> (2010). Both authors belong to a new generation of writers who, having experienced the collapse of the communist regime as adolescents, investigate the traumatic experience of change and adjustment to the social, economic and cultural realities of post-communist societies. While Hensel aims at recreating the lost <italic>Heimat</italic> (motherland) as an <italic>Erinnerungsraum</italic> (space of remembrance) and portraying the social tensions of the post-unification decade from an Eastern German perspective, Bradea focuses on depicting the desolate post-communist industrial landscape, as well as the everyday lives of anonymous Romanians caught in the vagaries of transition.

The literature of the Eastern March is strictly local. A collection of several dozen German-language novels and stories from the circle of ‘Ostmarkenliteratur’ (literature of the Eastern March), which on a scale unknown before and afterwards sends the reader back to this specific region, shows how important the Poznań Province had become on the verge of the 19th century. Geographical and topographic information in the creative output of writers constitute its ‘verbal map’.
Inspired by Barbara Piatti’s interpretative approach, I will attempt to answer key questions regarding the circumstances and conditions that are conductive to locating the plot of literary works in specific spaces and places, and to interpret the experience of space recorded in the literature of the Eastern March by means of this map.

The writer Emil Witting (1880-1952), known by German readers through the descriptions of the forests and pastures of the Carpathian Mountains, author of extensive relations dedicated to the bear (<italic>Frate Nicolae</italic>) and to deer (<italic>Scrimerul</italic>), conceives a novel dedicated to a painter connected to the Szekler’s world. Imre Nagy (1893-1976) served as a model for the main character. From this unfinished writing, three fragments were published. These have recently been translated into Hungarian, printed in Miercurea Ciuc in an illustrated edition containing Imre Nagy’s paintings and graphic works.

This study also includes the presentation of interpersonal relationships of the village people and thematises the metaphorical spaces of oppression and fear, the metaphorical space of waiting.
