<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Cytoplasms of fifteen wild <italic>Nicotianae</italic> and a male sterile cytoplasm (cms) from <italic>N. tabacum</italic> were bred into the genome of a standard Polish flue-cured cultivar Wislica. The sixteen iso-genomic alloplasmics were compared for expression of male sterility and for some traits related to field performance. In cms<italic>N. bigelovii, N. debneyi, N. exigua, N. megalosiphon</italic>or <italic>N. suaveolens</italic> stamens were absent, in cms<italic>N. tabacum, N. glauca, N. goodspeedii</italic> or <italic>N. undulata</italic> stamens were absent or rudimentary, in cms<italic>N. eastii, N. glutinosa</italic> or <italic>N. plumbaginifolia</italic>stamen tissue became petaloid, in those from <italic>N. knightiana</italic> and <italic>N. raimondii</italic>they were morphologically normal. Female organ morphology was changed in cms<italic>N. goodspeedii, N. occidentalis, N. exigua, N. debneyi</italic>or <italic>N. bigelovii</italic>, seed set was reduced only in cms<italic>N. occidentalis</italic>. Plant height in most alloplasmics was similar to that of the fertile variety but was strongly depressed by the cytoplasms of <italic>N. glutinosa, N. eastii</italic>and <italic>N. plumbaginifolia</italic>. Leaf area was positively affected by <italic>N. amplexicaulis, N. bigelovii</italic>and <italic>N. undulata</italic>cytoplasms, unaffected by <italic>N. suaveolens, N. tabacum</italic>and <italic>N. glaucacytoplasms</italic> and negatively affected by the remaining cytoplasms mostly because of the narrowing of the leaf blade. Cured leaf yields from cms<italic>N. bigelovii</italic> were higher than those of Wislica. Leaf yields from cms<italic>N. amplexicaulis, N. suaveolens, N. glauca</italic> or <italic>N. tabacum</italic> were not affected by the alien cytoplasm, whereas those from the remaining alloplasmics were depressed to different extents. Increased incidence of PVY and white spots (mostly attributable to <italic>Cercospora</italic> sp.) were observed on many of the alloplasmics especially on cms<italic>N. exigua</italic> and <italic>N. suaveolens</italic>(PVY) and increased white spots only on cms<italic>N. bigelovii, N. exigua, N. occidentalis</italic> and <italic>N. undulata</italic>.</p></abstract>
