<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">From 1967 until 1990, populations of five <italic>Sylvia</italic> species migrating through the southwestern coast of the Baltic Sea were considerably low and significantly decreasing in the Blackcap (<italic>Sylvia atricapilla</italic>), Garden Warbler (<italic>S. borin</italic>) and Barred Warbler (<italic>S. nisoria</italic>). While after that period a rapid increase in the populations of these migratory species was noted. Similar changes that had started about 1991 were shown by all five <italic>Sylvia</italic> species. Such coincidence could indicate some common factors acting upon the studied group of migrants at the same time. Apart from a clear increase in the long-term dynamics of the species observed at Bukowo-Kopań station, the Pearson correlation coefficients of these dynamics calculated for every pair of the analysed <italic>Sylvia</italic> species in 1967-2006 were high and statistically significant.Based on the distribution of recoveries of the Lesser Whitethroat (<italic>S. curruca</italic>) we assumed that the main fraction of birds passing the south-western coast of the Baltic Sea originated from the Scandinavian Peninsula. Recent climate changes observed in this area were consistent with the time when the increase in the number of caught birds was noted. Consequently, we suspect that the analysed <italic>Sylvia</italic> species passing this part of the coast share vast breeding grounds located mainly on the Fennoscandian Peninsula, where their populations are affected by the same common factors.</abstract>

Like a phoenix from the ashes

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The main migratory passage of Black Kites across the Mediterranean Sea occurs at the Strait of Gibraltar, where the migration peak is observed in early March. Conversely, in the Central Mediterranean the migration of this species is scarce during the supposed peak period, while hundreds of individuals are observed migrating later in the season, mostly in April and May. In the present study we investigate the spring migration of Black Kites at two sites of the Central Mediterranean, the island of Ustica and the Strait of Messina. Timing, age classes and water-crossing behaviour of this species suggest that large numbers of non-breeders use this route during spring. However, a peculiar migration timing of breeding pairs belonging to the Italian population cannot be excluded.</abstract>

Timing, age classes and water-crossing behaviour of Black Kites (<italic>Milvus migrans</italic>) during spring migration across the Central Mediterranean

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">A radar ornithological station has been created based on the meteorological radar MRL-5 and a specially designed algorithm. The system enables to plot radar charts within the radius of 60 km combining meteorological data with vectors of bird field flying at different heights and pass these charts online over to air traffic control operators. The data accumulated in the study made it possible to obtain certain characteristics of seasonal bird migration over central Israel. The system and the results of the study have become an integral part of ensuring air safety for Israeli military aircraft. The paper is an overview and summary of a development of the system, which was described in a few earlier publications.</abstract>

Radar monitoring of seasonal bird migration over central Israel

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The fat level and the body mass of recaptured birds ringed at the Cernek Ringing Station are presented in this study. Data from autumns of 2003-2005 were analysed. Species of different migratory and feeding habits are compared. A total of 351 recaptures of the Blackcap (<italic>Sylvia atricapilla</italic>), Garden Warbler (<italic>S. borin</italic>), Reed Warbler (<italic>Acrocephalus scirpaceus</italic>), Marsh Warbler (<italic>A. palustris</italic>) and Cetti's Warbler (<italic>Cettia cetti</italic>) were mist-netted and handled according to the South-East European Bird Migration Network (SEEN) standards.The mean weight changes of the Reed Warbler and Marsh Warbler and those of the Blackcap and Garden Warbler were similar within each genus but higher in <italic>Sylvia spp.</italic> as compared to <italic>Acrocephalus spp.</italic> The recapture rate was the highest in the Cetti's Warbler but the mean weight increase was the lowest as this is essentially a sedentary species. The stopover duration differed among the species. The mean stopover length was similar within <italic>Acrocephalus spp.</italic> (8.5 days in the Reed Warbler, 6.4 days in the Marsh Warbler) and <italic>Sylvia spp.</italic> (5.6 days in the Blackcap, 5.4 days in the Garden Warbler) and different in the Cetti's Warbler (16.6 days).Results indicate that migratory birds use Cernek location as refuelling station during the autumn migration and their fat level and body mass increase, but differ according to feeding and migrating habits.</abstract>

 The on-line version of the journal is a primary one to the printed edition. The Ring is an international journal dealing with problems of bird ringing, migration and monitoring bird numbers. The main fields of interest are original papers, review articles and methodical discussions. Information, progress reports, personal comments and short notes or news are also accepted to the informative columns of the journal. Although papers are refereed, conclusions, opinions and discussion are published on the author's responsibility. Innovative and even controversial ideas are appreciated.
