<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><italic>Juniperus excelsa</italic> is an East Mediterranean species found also in marginal, sub-mediterranean regions of the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It prefers shallow soils in the warmest habitats of the zone of thermophilous deciduous forests. In the past the rank of alliance and the name of <italic>Juniperion excelsae-foetidissimae</italic> have been suggested for the vegetation dominated by <italic>Juniperus excelsa</italic> in the Balkan Peninsula. In this paper we present the valid description of the alliance in accordance with the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature. The validation of the <italic>Juniperion excelsae-foetidissimae</italic> required description of a new association - the <italic>Querco trojanae-Juniperetum excelsae.</italic> The <italic>Juniperion excelsae-foetidissimae</italic> is classified within the order of <italic>Quercetalia pubescentis</italic> Klika 1933 (the <italic>Quercetea pubescentis</italic> Doing-Kraft ex Scamoni et Passarge 1959).</abstract>

Notes on phytosociology of <italic>Juniperus Excelsa</italic> in Macedonia (Southern Balkan Peninsula)

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The results of a phytosociological survey of the woods mainly growing on limestones in the Southern part of the Marches Region (Central Italy), that is part of the Monti Sibillini National Park, are here presented. This area is characterized by a temperate climate (upper mesotemperate and lower/upper supratemperate bioclimatic belts). In order to study the vegetation, 173 phytosociological relevés were carried out through the Braun-Blanquet methodology. All the data obtained were submitted to multivariate analysis. The phytosociological analysis is characterized in nine associations, whereof three are of new description (<italic>Lathyro veneti-Fagetum sylvaticae hieracietosum murorum, Cardamino kitaibelii-Fagetum sylvaticae corallorhizetosum trifidae</italic> and <italic>Cardamino kitaibelii-Fagetum sylvaticae anemonetosum nemorosae</italic>).</abstract>

Phytosociological Study of Beech and Beech-Mixed Woods in Monti Sibillini National Park (Central Apennines, Italy)

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The forests of the Tolfa-Ceriti mountains (Latium, central Italy) were investigated through a phytosociological approach. 249 relevés were performed and treated with multivariate analysis. 13 woodland communities were identified, of which 7 belong to <italic>Quercetalia pubescenti-petraeae</italic>, 1 to <italic>Fagetalia sylvaticae</italic>, 1 to <italic>Populetalia</italic> and 4 to <italic>Quercetalia ilicis</italic>. The thermophilous Turkey oak-forests occurring on the trachytic hills of the Ceriti Mountains and on the flysch substrates of the Tolfa Mountains were included in <italic>Rubio peregrinae-Quercetum cerridis</italic> ass. nova. <italic>Quercus cerris</italic> and <italic>Fraxinus angustifolia</italic> subsp. <italic>oxycarpa</italic> woodland communities of the footslopes have been ascribed to <italic>Fraxino oxycarpae-Quercetum cerridis</italic>, while the widespread mesophilus Turkey oak forests have been ascribed to <italic>Melico-Quercetum cerridis. Cephalantero longifoliae-Quercetum cerridis</italic> has been restricted to acid and oligotrophic soils. <italic>Quercus petraea</italic> woodlands, occurring on trachytic substrates have been described as a new association named <italic>Carici olbiensis-Quercetum petraeae</italic> ass. nova. All these mixed oak woods have been included in the alliance <italic>Crataego laevigatae-Quercion cerridis</italic> Arrigoni 1997. The nomenclatural problems concerning the prior name <italic>Teucrio siculi-Quercion cerridis</italic> Ubaldi 1988 are also discussed. The beech forests of the higher altitudes have been included in <italic>Fraxino orni-Fagetum sylvaticae</italic>, while the <italic>Alnus glutinosa</italic> ravine woodlands have been described as belonging to the new association <italic>Polysticho setiferi-Alnetum glutinosae</italic>. Secondary communities of <italic>Acer monspessulanum</italic> and <italic>Acer campestre</italic> developed on flysch substrates, and of <italic>Erica arborea</italic> and <italic>Arbutus unedo</italic> (<italic>Erico-Arbutetum unedonis</italic>) developed on trachytic substrates, have also been identified. Finally two types of <italic>Quercus ilex</italic> wood have been identified: <italic>Cyclamino repandi-Quercetum ilicis</italic>, on sandstones, and the new association <italic>Arbuto unedonis-Quercetum ilicis</italic> ass. nova on volcanic soils. This latter community can be considered as a coenological and geographical vicariant in central Italy of the sicilian <italic>Erico-Quercetum ilicis</italic>.</abstract>

The Forest Vegetation of the Tolfa-Ceriti Mountains (Northern Latium - Central Italy)

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Phytocoenological traits of forests of sessile oak in the area of Zrinska Gora were investigated in 2009. Phytocoenological research was conducted using a method of the Zürich-Montpellier School. A comparison was made with acido-thermophilic forests of sessile oak from central and north-western Croatia, then from Slovenia and the Mescek Mountains in Hungary.A statistical comparison was made by entering all the phytocoenological relevés into the Turboveg database. This was followed by a classical synthetic analysis of the phytocoenological relevés and a multivariate analysis using Syntax 2000 software. Average Ellenberg's values were calculated for each relevé with JUICE 6.3 software.Taking into consideration all the facts, it can be concluded that the newly established association <italic>Potentillo micranthae-Quercetum petraeae</italic> shows a high degree of independence and differentiation from other similar associations described to date. In relation to others, it is poorer in species, both in terms of the systematic categories to which it belongs and the number of elements from the orders of <italic>Fagetalia</italic> and <italic>Quercetalia pubescentis.</italic> Of the species occurring in acidophilic forests of sessile oak, <italic>Genista tinctoria, Chamaecytisus hirsutus</italic> and <italic>Dicranella heteromalla</italic> can be considered characteristic species, whereas <italic>Galium sylvaticum, Cephalanthera longifolia, Dianthus armeria</italic> and <italic>Viola alba</italic> can be termed differentiating species. The species <italic>Potentilla micrantha, Festuca drymeia</italic> and <italic>Luzula forsteri</italic> are very important for the structure, physiognomy and syndynamics of the association.It is subordinated to the alliance <italic>Quercion robori-petraeae</italic>, the order <italic>Quercetalia robori-petraeae</italic> and the class <italic>Querco-Fagetea.</italic></abstract>

Nomenclatural-Phytocoenological Analysis of the Association <italic>Potentillo Micranthae-Quercetum Petraeae</italic> Ass. Nova in Croatia

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><italic>Usnea glabrescens</italic> has been reported to be a re-found species after almost 24 years. We found this lichen in the Bielovodská dolina Valley, Tatry Mts. in 2008. The locality is situated in Tatra National Park near the borderline with Poland. Morphology and medullary chemistry of the specimen were typical for the species. <italic>Usnea glabrescens</italic> grew in a moderately open and humid mixed forest on the bark of <italic>Alnus incana.</italic></abstract>

Contribution to the Genus <italic>Usnea</italic> (Parmeliaceae) in Slovakia: <italic>Usnea Glabrescens</italic>

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The past and present distribution of a rare segetal weed darnel ryegrass (<italic>Lolium temulentum</italic>) in Slovakia is presented. The study is based on revision of herbarium specimens from 12 herbaria and a field survey carried out during 2005-2009. Altogether, 95 localities of this species were recorded in Slovakia. Prior to 1950 it was a relatively abundant taxon recorded and confirmed at 75 localities throughout the country, but then it began to vanish. Only 20 localities were recorded between 1950 and 1990, and in 1999 it was evaluated as extinct from Flora of Slovakia. However, since 2005 new occurrences were discovered in northern Slovakia (Orava and Pieniny regions), and its status had been changed. Results of the study are summarised in the map of historical and actual species distribution.</abstract>

Historical and Current Distribution of Segetal Weed <italic>Lolium Temulentum</italic> L. in Slovakia

<abstract xml:lang="en" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The present study aims to determine some common species of genus <italic>Alchemilla</italic> (<italic>Rosaceae</italic>) in Osogovo Mt. and West Balkan Mt. in Bulgaria. The ecological conditions in seven habitat types according to EUNIS with detected presence of <italic>Alchemilla</italic> species are compared. According to this classification, the habitats that were found belong to six general types: Transition mires and quaking bogs (D 2.3), Mountain hay meadows (E 2.3), Moist or wet eutrophic and mesotrophic grassland (E 3.4), Acid alpine and subalpine grassland (E 4.3), Subalpine moist or wet tall-herb and fern stands (E 5.5), Evergreen alpine and subalpine heath and scrub (F 2.2). Seven species were reported in the investigated regions: <italic>A. crinita</italic> Buser, <italic>A. erythropoda</italic> Juz., <italic>A. flabellata</italic> Buser, <italic>A. glabra</italic> Neygenf., <italic>A. glaucescens</italic> Wallr., <italic>A. monticola</italic> Opiz and <italic>A. viridiflora</italic> Rothm. In the paper are submitted some new reports for the presence of <italic>A. crinita, A. erythropoda</italic> and <italic>A. glabra</italic> in the investigated areas. Some preliminary results concerning the resources of the examined species are obtained.</abstract>
