<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>In the paper, dendrometric and biometric properties of four types of sample plots (size-constant, sizevariable, concentric circles, and relascope method) are comprehensively analyzed. Their possibilities to fulfil new demands for inventories, especially with respect to aims, information spectrum, the precision of results, economic efficiency and time-based comparability of results, which have being imposed during the last years, are reviewed as well. Experimental data obtained from up-to-now research of the author as well as from the computer simulations of model forest stands and direct field measurements in forest stands having diverse structure served as the base for this study. All types of sample plots were established in the same number and in the same location of the same forest stands, which ensures its maximum comparability. The data are processed, generalized and tested by using the adequate mathematical-statistical methods. The results provide proposals for optimal application of the studied types of sample plots in the planning and performance of sample-based forest inventories at the stand, regional as well as the national level. The above-mentioned procedures are an important part of the methodology and decision making and it cannot be performed in the same way for different level or region (locality). They are to be performed with regard to the forest structure, demands for information spectrum as well as to available financial resources.</p></abstract>

New view of properties and applicability of the circular and relascopic sample plots for the inventory and monitoring of the forest ecosystems

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The work addresses the thematic mapping and assessments of the forest stand structures based on a combination of remote sensing and terrestrial methods using geographic information systems (GIS). Building on our previous research, we present the results on thematic mapping of the sets of stand types in the model area Lomnista Valley in the Low Tatras (1 623 ha), structural types and elements, classification of structure and ecological stability of mountain forests in the localities Konštiaky, Široky uplaz, Martaluzka - Byčiarky in the Low Tatras covering 270 ha. In the locality Medvedia uboč in Lomnista Valley with the communities of natural forests in the fir-beach altitudinal vegetation zone, the innovative methods of thematic mapping of stand structure types and segments, based on RS, GIS, segmentation methods and mobile technologies, are presented. Stand texture types, elements and segments were identified, localized and partially classified on orthorectified digital multispectral aerial scenes combined with SPOT satellite scene. Historical aerial panchromatic images from the years 1949, 1971 and 1992 were used for interpretation of tendencies and trends in different types of stand textures. Spatial classification was established on the method of image segmentation. In the field, the total 98 segments at higher level covering 63 ha were localized and characterized in detail. A detailed descriptive system of the habitat, conservation, species, spatial and age structure of the segments was used. Research plots, detailed biometrically measured by FieldMap technology, were used as training plots for classification with RS data and as the calibration objects in a spatial description of the segments in the field. The presented approaches were verified in several model localities with the possibility of generalization for the entire range of forest communities in Slovakia. A multimedia system with records from the interior and exterior of typical stand structures and textures has been als o implemented.</p></abstract>

Central European Forestry Journal

Central European Forestry Journal (published as Lesnícky Èasopis - Forestry Journal until 2016) publishes novel science originating from research in forestry and related braches. Central European Forestry Journal is a professional peer-reviewed scientific journal published 4-time a year. The journal contains original papers and review papers of basic and applied research from all fields of forestry and related disciplines. The editorial office accepts the manuscripts within the focus of the journal exclusively in English language.  The journal does not have article processing charges (APCs) nor article submission charges.  Central European Forestry Journal, abbreviation: Cent. Eur. For. J., publishes original papers and review papers of basic and applied research from all fields of forestry and related scientific areas.  The journal focuses on forestry issues relevant for Europe, primarily Central European regions. Original works and review papers can be submitted only in English language.  The corresponding author is responsible for the originality of the submitted manuscript. The manuscript must not be submitted for review or publication elsewhere at the same time.  The content and the format of the submitted papers are peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers (i.e. double blind peer review). The editor of the journal decides on the acceptance, rejection, or the need for the revision of the paper upon the reviews. If the editor decides that the manuscript needs to be revised, the authors are obliged to prepare a letter, in which they react to fundamental reviewers’ comments.  Aspects of forest ecology, management planning, protection, monitoring, economics, but also silviculture, game management, landscape creation and ecology, interactions between forestry and wood processing sectors in the Central and also other regions of Europe.
