<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> We have limited knowledge of determinants of consumer preferences for wild-caught versus farmed-raised fish, so this work aims to investigate the impact of sociodemographics, habits and frequency of fresh fish consumption, such as involvement in cooking, on the preferences for wild versus farmed fish. A survey was done on a sample of 1151 fish consumers in Croatia. Results showed that female, older consumers, consumers with higher income and those living in coastal parts of Croatia give higher preferences for wild fish and they detect differences between the taste of wild and farmed fish. Consumers with higher levels of habits of fresh fish consumption, who eat fresh fish often and are more involved in cooking, prefer wild-caught fish. These findings provide valuable information for the aquaculture sector, especially for planning marketing strategies for the promotion of farmed fish.</abstract>

Wild-Caught Versus Farmed Fish – Consumer Perception

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> Phytophilous community on Myriophyllum spicatum was studied in a small artificial urban lake in the city of Osijek (eastern Croatia), during the spring and summer season in 2010. In the eutrophic conditions, macrophyte stands were well developed and in the formed periphyton representatives of the following invertebrate taxa were found: Hydrozoa, Nematoda, Gastropoda, Cladocera, Copepoda, Insecta larvae - including families Chironomidae and Coleoptera. They displayed differences in temporal abundance patterns. Two separate phases in macrophyte colonization with differences in invertebrate composition and abundance were recorded. Insect larvae, particularly Chironomidae, were most abundant in the first phase, through the spring period, and Hydra oligactis (brown hydra) was most abundant in the second phase, i.e. summer period. Concurrently, microcrustacean abundance declined towards the end of the summer. Results of the analyses indicated that water temperature and perihyton biomass were the variables exerting the main influence on the invertebrate assemblage, while interestingly, macrophyte size and biomass were negatively correlated with most of the fauna abundance. On the other hand, brown hydra was negatively correlated with all other invertebrate taxa, except gastropods. Larger surface of submersed macrophytes is the main parameter supporting the increase of invertebrate abundance due to providing protection from predators and growth for periphyton, an important food source for these phytophilous organisms. Macrophyte length was positively correlated with Hydra abundance, while Chironomids were more influenced by periphyton biomass. These organisms can indicate water quality conditions and a potential increase in primary and secondary production.</abstract>

Phytophilous Fauna of a Small and Artificial Urban Lake

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> The capability of a low-cost probiotic product was evaluated in Penaeus monodon reared under an outdoor culture system for a period of 90 days. The low-cost probiotic product was formulated by mixing the broth culture of Bacillus cereus along with commercial chalk powder in 1:1 ratio. The prepared probiotic product as a powdered supplement was incorporated along with the shrimp diet at various concentrations (1 to 5%). The viability of B. cereus in the experimental diet was tested once in 30 days up to 90 days during the experimentation. After 90 days of feeding experiments, the growth performance of shrimp was determined with a maximum production of 11.98 ± 0.367 g, SGR of 5.030 ± 0.171% and FCE of 86.63 ± 1.300% in P. monodon fed D4 diet (4% probiotic supplement). The immunological parameters determined at the end of the culture experiment showed variation among diets. The total haemocyte count (273.66 ± 3.09 x 105 cells/ml), phenoloxidase activity (0.132 ± 0.007 OD) and respiratory burst activity (0.291 ± 0.020 O.D) were high in P. monodon fed D4 diet. Similar effects were observed for plasma protein concentration (68.00 ± 1.41 mg/ ml), lysozyme activity (0.483 ± 0.014 U/ml) and bactericidal activity (81.0 ± 1.33%) in shrimp fed D4 diet. The results of the present investigation conclude that the probiotic product at a concentration of 4% was effective in elevating the growth and immune performances in shrimp P. monodon.</abstract>

Immunomodulatory and Growth-Promoting Potential of Lowcost Probiotic Product in Penaeus Monodon Culture System

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> The present study was designed to assess the effect of chlordecone on the stimulation of oxidative stress in gill, liver and brain tissues of the cichlid fish, Pseudetroplus maculatus. Fishes were exposed to chlordecone at two sublethal concentrations, 3.5 and 7 μg/L, for 24, 72 and 96 h, maintaining ten animals in each group. Chlordecone treatment did not alter the body weight of the animal. However, significant increase in the secretion of mucous and decrease in the weights of gill, brain and hepatosomatic index were observed at 7 μg/L of chlordecone treatment only after 96 h. Gill tissue showed significant increase in the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione reductase along with elevated levels of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation in concentration and timedependent manner. This could be the defensive mechanism of gill tissue to escape the toxic effects of chlordecone. In the liver tissue, superoxide dismutase activity was increased by 39% at 3.5 μg/L and by 73% at 7 μg/L of chlordecone treatment. Activities of catalase and glutathione reductase were decreased 3 to 9 times at 3.5 and 7 μg/L concentrations, respectively, with concomitant increase in hydrogen peroxide generation (17 to 28 times) and lipid peroxidation (3 to 7 times) at the end of 96 h, which reveals the failure of hepatic antioxidant system to prevent free radical generation owing to chlordecone exposure. Activities of all antioxidant enzymes in the brain were inhibited by 29 to 80% along with the induction of hydrogen peroxide (13 to 20 times) and lipid peroxidation (6 to 11 times), thereby indicating imbalance in the antioxidant status. Activities of gill and liver marker enzyme - alkaline phosphatase - and acetylcholinesterase in brain were decreased. Therefore, imbalance in the antioxidant defence system as a result of chlordecone toxicity could lead to susceptible oxidative stress in various tissues of the fish.</abstract>

Evidence for Chlordecone-Stimulated Oxidative Stress in Different Tissues of the Cichlid Fish, Pseudetroplus Maculatus (Bloch, 1795)

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> 51 articles published in the Croatian Journal of Fisheries from 1938 until 2016, covering aquaculture research in Croatia, have been included in this study. Published articles have been classified into seven groups based on their main topics. Topics include: aquaculture statistics in Croatia; disease and health care; farming technology; management, economics and environmental protection; fish nutrition and product quality; improving aquaculture; and species biology and ecology. The study concisely informs about aquaculture research in Croatia since 1938. Due to large contribution to the research, development and quality management of Croatian aquaculture, further promotion and development of Croatian Journal of Fisheries is required.</abstract>

 The Croatian Journal of Fisheries was established in 1938 and today possesses a long-term tradition of publishing papers that deal with both freshwater and marine fisheries. Areas covered by the Journal include ichthyology, aquaculture, ecology and diseases of fish and other aquatic organisms, problems of open waters and other topics related to the fisheries field.  Prior to publication, articles pass through rigorous review by senior scientists from around the world. The Journal features articles that reflect original research, interpretative content and subject matter of interest to the fisheries profession.
