<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Invasive Ponto-Caspian gobies (monkey goby <italic>Neogobius fluviatilis,</italic> round goby <italic>Neogobius melanostomus</italic> and bighead goby <italic>Ponticola kessleri)</italic> have recently caused dramatic changes in fish assemblage structure throughout European river systems. This review provides summary of recent research on their dietary habits, age and growth, phylogenetic lineages and gene diversity. The principal food of all three species is invertebrates, and more rarely fish, which depends on the type of habitat, part of the year, as well as the morphological characteristics of species. According to the von Bertalanffy growth model, size at age is specific for the region, but due to its disadvantages it is necessary to test other growth models. Phylogenetic analysis of monkey goby and round goby indicates separation between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea haplotypes. The greatest genetic diversity is found among populations of the Black Sea, and the lowest among European invaders. The lack of molecular research on bighead goby requires further studies.</abstract>

The Review of Ecological and Genetic Research of Ponto-Caspian Gobies (Pisces, Gobiidae) in Europe

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The distribution and occurrence of epibionts on the dorsal carapace, ventral carapace and chela of 325 specimens of <italic>Callinectes amnicola</italic> (De Rocheburne, 1883) (103.4 - 138.7 mm carapace width) from the Qua Iboe (QIRE) and Imo River (IRE) estuaries in southeast Nigeria was determined. The only ectosymbiont observed was cirriped barnacle, Chelonibia patula, mostly of smaller sizes (2.25 mm), infesting only 25-29% of intermoult crabs, more on females and in the Imo River estuary, with an average of four barnacles per crab, presupposing low level of epibiont-host interaction. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in spatial distribution but epibionts were highest in the dry season in low salinity IRE (0.53‰) and in wet season in the medium-salinity QIRE (17.4‰). No public health risk has been reported among crab consumers in the study area. This study highlights epibiont-host interaction in the study area largely unknown for proper management of the fishery.</abstract>

Distribution and Size of Barnacle <italic>Chelonibia patula</italic> Fouling Blue Crab <italic>Callinectes amnicola</italic> in Southeast Nigeria

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><italic>Emerita emeritus</italic> is an abundant species in Bengkulu coastal waters, but the knowledge of its reproductive biology is poor. The present study was conducted to elucidate the reproductive aspects of ovigerous female <italic>E. emeritus,</italic> including fecundity, egg volume and reproductive output. This study was conducted between January 2015 and January 2016 in Bengkulu coastal waters, Indonesia. Samples were collected manually using shovels and hands. The results showed that ovigerous females occurred every month. Fecundity increased significantly in ovigerous females proportional to the size. No correlation was shown between sea surface temperature and egg production. Fecundity and reproductive output decreased throughout the embryonic development.</abstract>

Reproductive Biology of Ovigerous Female <italic>Emerita emeritus</italic> (Crustacea, Decapoda) in Bengkulu Coastal Waters, Indonesia: Egg Production and Reproductive Output

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Cannibalism is an important characteristic of African catfish that significantly reduces the number of stocked fish at harvest. This study evaluates the effect of reciprocal hybridization of <italic>Clarias batrachus</italic> and <italic>Clarias gariepinus</italic> on cannibalism and growth performance of their progenies in an indoor rearing system. The result obtained reveals excellent performance of hybrids of <italic>C. gariepinus</italic> ♂ and <italic>C. batrachus</italic> ♀ over the purebreds in terms of growth. However, the reciprocal hybrids between <italic>C. gariepinus</italic> ♀ and <italic>C. batrachus</italic> ♂ all died few hours after hatching. Cannibalism was significantly reduced in the crosses between <italic>C. gariepinus</italic> ♂ and <italic>C. batrachus</italic> ♀ with 100% survival after five months of culture. Hence, this could be exploited in commercial production of catfish to reduce cannibalism and increase harvest size of fish farmers.</abstract>

Cannibalism and Performance Evaluation of Hybrids between <italic>Clarias batrachus</italic> and <italic>Clarias gariepinus</italic>

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Climate changes constitute the greatest challenge of this century due to the modifications they cause in weather and environmental conditions, and thus affecting the social and economic dynamics at multiple levels. Because all invertebrates and fish used for human consumption are poikilotherms, they are very sensitive to modifications in the environment, namely temperature and levels of oxygen. Phenomena like temperature rising, acidification, ocean stratification and changes in salinity are already perceptible and susceptible of causing severe consequences in aquatic ecosystems. Falling productivity, species migration and localized extinctions, as well as conflict over the use of scarce resources and increased risks associated with more extreme climatic events are among the possible consequences. Increased climate variability justifies a focus on the design and promotion of strategies to control the inherent risk and increase the resilience of marine and freshwater systems that strongly affect the livelihoods of millions of human beings worldwide. A multidimensional and holistic concept for the sustainable management of maritime and marine resources is indissociable from the unequivocal evidence of climate changes. Raising awareness of public in general and ocean stakeholders for the relevance of the topic at hand are assumed as key dimensions with the present article.</abstract>

 The Croatian Journal of Fisheries was established in 1938 and today possesses a long-term tradition of publishing papers that deal with both freshwater and marine fisheries. Areas covered by the Journal include ichthyology, aquaculture, ecology and diseases of fish and other aquatic organisms, problems of open waters and other topics related to the fisheries field.
