<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Interaction between moving vehicle and ground represents the actual problem. Traffic seismicity affects the environment and causes worsening of its parameters. Several approaches have been developed to solve the phenomena of the vehicle-ground interaction. This problem needs to be analysed as a complex system when particular elements interact together. The interaction results in unique magnitudes of the contact forces. This paper presents the results of the analysis of vehicle-ground interaction. Calculations have been made in software ADINA using Finite Element Method. Dynamic characteristics of the vehicle have been determined according to the lorry Tatra 815. Contact forces of the tyres have been applied as point and distributed load respectively.</abstract>

It brings assessment of fire protection in the folk house Habánsky Dvor, situated in the village of Veľké Leváre, whose function was changed into the museum. It goes into static analysis of existing load-bearing structures and assessment of their fire resistance according to Eurocodes.</abstract>

Solution of Fire Protection in Historic Buildings

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The issue of emissions from road traffic is compounded by the fact that the number of vehicles and driven kilometres increase each year. Road traffic is one of the main sources of particulate matter and traffic volume is still increasing and has unpleasant impact on longevity of the pavements and the environment. Vehicle motions cause mechanical wearing of the asphalt pavement surface - wearing course by vehicle tyres. The contribution deals with abrasion of bituminous wearing courses of pavements. The asphalt mixtures of wearing courses are compared in terms of mechanically separated particulate matter. The samples of asphalt mixtures were rutted in wheel tracking machine. The particulate matter measurements were performed in laboratory conditions. The experimental laboratory measurements make it possible to sample particulates without contamination from exhaust emissions, abraded particles from vehicles, resuspension of road dust and climate affects. The contribution offers partial results of measurements on six trial samples of asphalt mixtures with different composition. It presents particulate matter morphology and the comparison of rutted asphalt samples in terms of PM mass concentrations and chemical composition.</abstract>

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The article describes general principles and basis of evaluation of existing railway bridges based on the concept of load-carrying capacity determination. Compared to the design of a new bridge, the modified reliability level for existing bridges evaluation should be considered due to implementation of the additional data related to bridge condition and behaviour obtained from regular inspections. Based on those data respecting the bridge remaining lifetime, a modification of partial safety factors for actions and materials could be respected in the bridge evaluation process. A great attention is also paid to the specific problems of determination of load-caring capacity of steel railway bridges in service. Recommendation for global analysis and methodology for existing steel bridge superstructure load-carrying capacity determination are described too.</abstract>

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">We have analysed historical trusses based on previous building-historical researches, particularly focusing on sacral buildings, in chosen regions of Slovakia, with one of the primary goals to examine geometric concepts and proportional relationships used for their construction. The knowledge of proportional principles and relationships used in various historical sacral trusses, additionally supported by contemporary literature, was applied to a village house truss from 1774 in Vápenná, Jeseníky district of the Czech Republic.</abstract>

It is also a good tool to obtain valuable information about current condition of the structures that could help to determine residual lifetime. The quality of modal testing results is highly dependent on the proper estimation of the natural frequencies from the frequency response function. Experimental Modal Test of the Laboratory Model of Steel Truss Structure

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">A Lattice Boltzmann method is used to analyse incompressible fluid flow in a two-dimensional cavity and flow in the channel past cylindrical obstacle. The method solves the Boltzmann’s transport equation using simple computational grid - lattice. With the proper choice of the collision operator, the Boltzmann’s equation can be converted into incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. Lid-driven cavity benchmark case for various Reynolds numbers and flow past cylinder is presented in the article. The method produces stable solutions with results comparable to those in literature and is very easy to implement.</abstract>

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The estimation of real geotechnical parameters is key factor for safe and economic design of geotechnical structures. One of these are pile foundations, which require proper design and evaluation due to accessing more deep foundation soil and because remediation work of not bearable piles or broken piles is a crucial operation. For this reason, geotechnical field testing like cone penetration test (CPT), standard penetration (SPT) or dynamic penetration test (DP) are realized in order to receive continuous information about soil strata. Comparing with rotary core drilling type of survey with sampling, these methods are more progressive. From engineering geologist point of view, it is more important to know geological characterization of locality but geotechnical engineers have more interest above the real geotechnical parameters of foundation soils. The role of engineering geologist cannot be underestimated because important geological processes in origin or during history can explain behaviour of a geological environment. In effort to streamline the survey, investigation by penetration tests is done as it is able to provide enough information for designers. This paper deals with actual trends in pile foundation design; because there are no new standards and usable standards are very old. Estimation of the bearing capacity of a single pile can be demonstrated on the example of determination of the cone factor <italic>Nk</italic> from CPT testing. Then results were compared with other common methods.</abstract>

Contribution to Estimating Bearing Capacity of Pile in Clayey Soils

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">The geotechnical monitoring of the slope deformations is widespread at present time. In many geological localities and civil engineering construction areas, monitoring is a unique tool for controlling of negative factors and processes, also inform us about actual state of rock environment or interacting structures. It is necessary for risk assessment. In our case, geotechnical monitoring is controlling rockslide activity around in the future part of motorway. The construction of new highway route D1 from Bratislava to Košice crosses the territory which is affected by a massive rockslide close to Kraľovany village. There was a need to monitor the activity of a large unstable rockslide with deep shear planes. In this case of underground movement activity, the Department of Geotechnics of the University of Žilina installed inclinometers at the unstable area which worked on Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) principle. Based on provided measurements, effectivity and suitability of TDR inclinometers for monitoring of deep underground movement activity is demonstrated.</abstract>

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Simplification of the design of Mechanically Stabilized Earth wall structures (MSE wall or MSEW) is now an important factor that helps us not only to save a time and costs, but also to achieve the desired results more reliably. It is quite common way in practice, that the designer of a section of motorway or railway line gives order for design to a supplier of geosynthetics materials. However, supplier company has experience and skills, but a general designer does not review the safety level of design and its efficiency, and is simply incorporating into the overall design of the construction project. Actually, large number of analytical computational methods for analysis and design of MSE walls or similar structures are known. The problem of these analytical methods is the verification of deformations and global stability of structure. The article aims to clarify two methods of calculating the internal stability of MSE wall and their comparison with FEM numerical model. Comparison of design approaches allows us to draft an effective retaining wall and tells us about the appropriateness of using a reinforcing element.</abstract>

Civil and Environmental Engineering

 eISSN: 2199-6512  Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is a scientific-technical journal, which publishes original research articles with relation to civil engineering, architecture, transport structures, environmental engineering, building structures and materials, and construction management. CEE is issued two times per year. CEE journal was founded by the faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Žilina, Slovakia on 5 October 2004. The Faculty of Civil Engineering, was established in 1953 as one of five founding faculties of the University of Railway Transport in Prague (old Czechoslovakia). Moving to the city of Žilina in 1959 gave the faculty an impulse for further development. At present, the faculty is a highly respected scientific and educational institution offering bachelor, master and doctoral study programmes in various technical fields of civil and environmental engineering. In its scientific research and professional activities, the faculty focuses on solving theoretical problems connected with designing transport structures and buildings, use of new materials, design of green buildings, technological processes and numerical simulations, and environmental aspects of transport.  First volumes of the journal were published in Slovak language, and eventually the faculty decided to publish articles in English. A successful new period of the journal started with a strategic alliance with the former publisher DeGruyter Open, later renamed as Sciendo. Presently, CEE journal is a single-blind peer-reviewed journal published as open access based on Creative Common Licence. The journal has been indexed in Scopus and Thomson Reuter databases since 2018, and year 2019 marked the appointment of new co-editors for 14 selected topics of the journal. The most recent recognition of the journal is the best quartile Q3 award by the portal Scimago Journal &amp; Country Rank.  Archiving  Sciendo archives the contents of this journal in Portico - digital long-term preservation service of scholarly books, journals and collections.
