<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">This paper deals with the load-carrying capacity calculation of laterally loaded metal dowel type connections according to Eurocode 5. It is based on analytically derived, relatively complicated mathematical relationships, and thus it can be quite laborious for practical use. The aim is to propose a possible simplification of the calculation. Due to quite a great variability of fasteners’ types and the connection arrangements, the attention is paid to the most commonly used nailed connections. There was performed quite an extensive parametric study focused on the calculation of load-carrying capacity of the simple shear and double shear plane nail connections, joining two or three timber parts of softwood or hardwood. Based on the study results, in conclusion there are presented simplifying recommendations for practical design.</abstract>

Outlier Diagnostic in Geodetic Intersection

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> The article deals with the analysis of the skid resistance results measured at the long-term monitored road sections in Slovakia in perspective of the possibility of the deterioration functions determination for the purposes of the pavement management system. There were 11 road sections evaluated, on which have been surface characteristics measured since 1998. The focus was on the evaluation of the longitudinal friction coefficient Mu measured by device Skiddometer BV11, which is the property of the Slovak Road Administration. Beside the Mu parameter, the test conditions were observed and evaluated, as well (measured speed, air and surface temperature, type of asphalts of the wearing course, traffic load, and the season (spring, autumn, respectively) in which the skid resistance measurements were performed. In conclusion, there was reviewed a presumption of the possibility to determine a deterioration functions for skid resistance in point of view the quality of the data, which have been collected on the Slovak long-term monitored road sections.</abstract>

Economic Functions Proposal of Urgency Prioritization of Investment Projects of Operated Railway Bridges

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> The article was created as a reaction on the request of the Slovak Road Administration, whether it would be possible to evaluate level of friction on the road network only by using laser equipped device Profilograph GE, instead of by using longitudinal friction coefficient measuring device Skiddometer BV11, which is slow, much more difficult on operation and it is necessary to fulfil the water tank for measurements. In order to find out the answer, there were evaluated measurements performed on road sections in Slovakia for the past few years. The main goal was to compare results obtained by both devices, and to find a relevant correlation between them. For better understanding of the problematic and for the demonstration of disadvantages of some texture characteristics, there are performed a comparisons of the different parameters evaluated on model surface profiles in the end of this work.</abstract>

The Usability of Different Skid Resistance Characteristics in Road Assessment

The numerical methods are mainly applied for the solutions of the interaction of similar systems. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is the best-known and widely used. It provides appropriate accuracy. In this article, commercial computer software ADINA based on the FEM is used to solve kinematic excitation of vehicle. The 2D model of vehicle which represents real type of lorry T-815 is excited by simulation of passage across obstacle. There are compared dynamic responses of the vehicle on the kinematic excitation at different speeds.</abstract>

Numerical Simulation Of Moving Vehicle Across the Obstacle

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> The alternative energy sources have been getting popular for last decades as a new way to obtain enough energy especially for countries which do not have rich natural reservoirs of fossil fuels. Gathering the thermal energy from the solar radiation seems to be as one of the cheapest alternatives of them. The disadvantage of it is the overflow of the heat energy during the summer and lack of them during the winter, when the demand for heat is on top. The underground thermal energy storage can be a good alternative for accumulating the heat energy and then offers it on demand. However, it is difficult to monitor the real physical condition in the soil. In the article, the results of numerical simulation are shown as a good way for a better identification of the process of accumulating the energy to the soil material.</abstract>

Numerical Simulation of Thermal Energy Storage in Underground Soil Heat Accumulator

<abstract xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> The article deals with a spatial problem - setting the best places for tourism development in Panevėžys district (Lithuania). In order to select areas using ArcGIS software, there was developed a model that evaluated the criteria that influence the selection of areas suitable for tourism. The article presents a digital map, which indicates most suitable locations for rural development by evaluating zones by points in order of importance. The evaluation scale is from 10 points (the most suitable location) to 2 points (the least suitable location). Evaluation points in thematic maps indicate exact locations that are most suitable for tourism homesteads.</abstract>

Civil and Environmental Engineering

 eISSN: 2199-6512  Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is a scientific-technical journal, which publishes original research articles with relation to civil engineering, architecture, transport structures, environmental engineering, building structures and materials, and construction management. CEE is issued two times per year. CEE journal was founded by the faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Žilina, Slovakia on 5 October 2004. The Faculty of Civil Engineering, was established in 1953 as one of five founding faculties of the University of Railway Transport in Prague (old Czechoslovakia). Moving to the city of Žilina in 1959 gave the faculty an impulse for further development. At present, the faculty is a highly respected scientific and educational institution offering bachelor, master and doctoral study programmes in various technical fields of civil and environmental engineering. In its scientific research and professional activities, the faculty focuses on solving theoretical problems connected with designing transport structures and buildings, use of new materials, design of green buildings, technological processes and numerical simulations, and environmental aspects of transport.  First volumes of the journal were published in Slovak language, and eventually the faculty decided to publish articles in English. A successful new period of the journal started with a strategic alliance with the former publisher DeGruyter Open, later renamed as Sciendo. Presently, CEE journal is a single-blind peer-reviewed journal published as open access based on Creative Common Licence. The journal has been indexed in Scopus and Thomson Reuter databases since 2018, and year 2019 marked the appointment of new co-editors for 14 selected topics of the journal. The most recent recognition of the journal is the best quartile Q3 award by the portal Scimago Journal &amp; Country Rank.  Archiving  Sciendo archives the contents of this journal in Portico - digital long-term preservation service of scholarly books, journals and collections.
