The article presents the initial stage of research conducted at the Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University in Brno. The aim of the research is to examine the departmental students’ intercultural competence (IC) at the beginning of their studies (autumn 2011), compare it with their level of IC at the end of their studies (autumn 2016) and investigate the influences that played a role in their IC development. In this paper, only the initial stage of the research is presented, i.e. examining the students’ IC at the beginning of the studies. The Intercultural Development Inventory®, version 3, was used for the purposes of the research. Since this instrument is not currently being used for academic or corporate purposes in the Czech (or Slovak) Republic, a secondary aim of the article is to introduce it to the wider academic community. The results indicate that students tend to overestimate their level of IC, and find themselves in ethnocentric stages of intercultural development at the beginning of their university studies.
Having passed his secondary-school graduation exam, the young patriot Jaroslav Cisař left Brno to study mathematics and astronomy in New York. He reacted to the fire of war in 1914 by his active engagement in anti-Austrian resistance, whose aim was the restoration of the independence of the Czech nation. After the arrival of T. G. Masaryk in the United States, he became his personal secretary in the spring of 1918. Following the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, he worked at the Czechoslovak embassy in London, from 1927 in the newspaper Lidove noviny in Brno. After the occupation, he left for emigration, where he was involved in the tasks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After the change in the political situation in 1948, he was released from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was fortunate enough to be employed as an astronomer at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. From the 1970s, he struggled with normalisation authorities over his return to the homeland. That was successfully accomplished in 1980.

The worldwide energy production nowadays is over 3400 GW while storage systems have a capacity of only 90 GW . There is a good solution for additional storage capacity in flywheel energy storage systems (FES). The main advantage of FES is its relatively high efficiency especially with using the active magnetic bearing system. Therefore there exist good reasons for appropriate simulations and for creating a suitable magneto-structural control system. The magnetic bearing, including actuation, is simulated in the ANSYS parametric design language (APDL). APDL is used to create the loops of transient simulations where boundary conditions (BC) are updated based upon a “gap sensor” which controls the nodal position values of the centroid of the shaft and the current density inputs onto the copper windings.

The paper presents the possibilities of developing the psychodidactic skills of students participating in a new pedagogical practicum conducted by the Department of Art of Masaryk University in Brno. Special art education (SAE), a program primarily designed for sociallydisadvantaged clients, imposes specific requirements on leading art activities. The students became part of a qualitative research program, which was implemented from 2010 to 2013 and which helped to articulate which psycho-didactic skills each student already had; this was accomplished through the implementation of specific art activities with clients from five participating institutions. The paper presents a part of the results of the research.
An important role in the activities of the Slovakophile movement, which was born in Bohemia and Moravia at the end of the 1870s, was played by book culture. Especially by means of books and articles in magazines, Czech Slovakophiles acquainted the wider Czech public with the position of Slovaks in Hungary and aroused interest in the development of Czech-Slovak solidarity. A significant role in this activity was played by the national-defence and Slovakophile association Czechoslovak Unity in Prague (1896–1914), which would send the Slovaks books and magazines, and even the entire libraries. Cooperation in this area was supported even by T. G. Masaryk, but especially by such Slovakophiles as Rudolf Pokorný, Josef Holeček, Adolf Heyduk, Karel Kálal, Jaroslav Vlček, František Pastrnek and František Bílý.
