Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the condition of Taman Nostalgia in terms of vitality (the quality of function, physic (environment), and meaning). The study implements descriptive approach, by which the study presents and describes the condition of Taman Nostalgia based on the phenomenon found in the field. The data are collected through documentation, observation, and interviews and are analyzed using descriptive approach and Project for Public Space. The results showed that the condition of Taman Nostalgia in terms of vitality has decreased due to several causes, such as the direct connection between relaxing area and garden area, the location and capacity of the plaza which is limited and not functional, direct connection between playground and plant area, the absence of space marker and the division of sub space in the parking area, the placement of jogging track separated and not connected to the centre of park activity, unattractive culinary area and its forming activities, limited space of sports centre, and unavailability of supporting facilities. Likewise, seen from the aspects of forming quality of the area, the park showed the absence of management concerning the aspect of needs (comfort, relaxation, passive/active engagement, and discovery), user rights (access and ease of achievement, freedom of action, claim, and change), and meaning (legibility, relevance between cultural norms and the user, individual connection, group connection, connection to larger society, biological connection, and connection to other world).

Abstract

Terms such as vitality and authenticity are difficult to define. Moreover, they cannot be considered true psychoanalytic concepts. If, however, as is happening, psychoanalysis tries to theorize in a more fine-grained manner the non-specific aspects of treatment, such as those related to the person of the analyst, then it becomes inevitable to refer to them. The thesis of the article is that vitality should emerge from its vagueness and be transformed into a precise psychoanalytic concept. This can be done if we discuss it in light of Bion’s concept of negative capability and the post-Bionian theory of the analytic field. Every time the analyst rediscovers to his surprise the dreamlike dimension of the session, he becomes vital gain and reinvests the patient, the analysis and the psychoanalytic method. Then he realizes that he is always a character in the stories of the analysis and has the chance to try to guess what happens by relying on his intensified bodily or emotional reaction.

Abstract

The aim of ongoing studies was to expand the non-destructive monitoring of Isoëtes lacustris (Vöge 2004) resulting in a description of the vitality and structure of the population. The influence of the environment on the development of the plant was the subject of extended studies carried out between 1995 and 2014 in more than 100 lakes throughout Europe. The environment was characterized through conductivity, pH and Secchi depth of the lake water and the accompanying submersed plant species, as well as the plant performance through the mean number of leaves of 20 sporogenous plants. The counting of the leaves was performed whilst diving. The vitality level was defined based on Vöge (2004) and related to the environmental conditions; these are referred to in the context. The inventory of the accompanying plant species may reflect a changing environment. The method is demonstrated through case examples. A highly significant correlation between the mean and the smallest number of leaves of sporogenous plants enables separating juvenile from adult plants. Finally, recent results show a relationship between the vitality level and the structure of the population.

Abstract

The population structure of Carex dioica – a rare boggy species in Ukraine – has been studied for the first time. As a result, five types of spatial arrangement of C. dioica individuals, depending on their reproduction and living conditions, were established: scattered-diffuse, densely-diffuse, group, spotted and mosaic. Intensive vegetative propagation (often in the absence of seed reproduction) of individuals contributes to the group and spotted spatial structure of population. For low intensity of seed and vegetative reproduction, the arrangement of generative individuals turned out to be scattered-diffuse. Effective generative reproduction of a population was accompanied by a densely-diffuse distribution of individuals, and a combined type of reproduction (effective generative and vegetative) under favourable growth conditions contributes to its mosaic spatial structure.

Regardless of the growth conditions, all C. dioica populations were characterised by a left-hand age spectrum which was the result of an effective vegetative renovation of individuals and a stress-tolerant type of strategy of this species.

Under optimal growth conditions, the C. dioica populations were characterised by the prevalance of females compared to male ones (2:1), and under stress – a radical change in their sex ratio was observed towards a complete dominance of one of the genders. It was found that 50% of the studied C. dioica populations appeared to be thriving. Regardless of the vitality type of the population, the female individuals of this species, compared to male ones, realised their growth potential much better and, therefore, made a greater contribution to population vitality.

Abstract

Migrants are often the carriers of new skills and original abilities. This study focuses on the importance of ‘new urban entrepreneurship’ - in particular, ethnic or migrant business firms - as a major driver of creative and urban dynamics and economic vitality in urban agglomerations. The paper offers a general account of both backgrounds and socio-economic implications of migrant entrepreneurship in large agglomerations and highlights the socio-economic heterogeneity in motivation and performance among different groups of migrant entrepreneurs. This demographic- cultural diversity prompts intriguing questions about differences in business performance among distinct groups of migrant entrepreneurs, even in the same ethnic group. In the paper, a recently developed and amended version of data envelopment analysis (DEA), viz. super-efficiency, is presented and applied to a group of Moroccan entrepreneurs in four large cities in the Netherlands. The main research aim is (i) to identify the best-performing firms (so-called ‘entrepreneurial heroes’) from a broad management and business perspective, while (ii) the background of our findings are more thoroughly analysed. The paper ends with some general concluding remarks on urban business strategies.
