Lean Information Management: Criteria For Selecting Key Performance Indicators At Shop Floor

Abstract

Most successful organizations worldwide use key performance indicators as an important part of their corporate strategy in order to forecast, measure and plan their businesses. Performance metrics vary in their purpose, definition and content. Therefore, the way organizations select what they think are the optimal indicators for their businesses varies from company to company, sometimes even from department to department. This study aims to answer the question of what is the most suitable way to define and select key performance indicators. More than that, it identifies the right criteria to select key performance indicators at shop floor level. This paper contributes to prior research by analysing and comparing previously researched selection criteria and proposes an original six-criteria-model, which caters towards choosing the most adequate KPIs. Furthermore, the authors take the research a step further by further steps to closed research gaps within this field of study.

Odel of Dynamic Integration of Lean Shop Floor Management Within the Organizational Management System

Abstract

The key to achieve a sustainable development lies in the customer satisfaction through improved quality, reduced cost, reduced delivery lead times and proper communication. The objective of the lean manufacturing system (LMS) is to identify and eliminate the processes and resources which do not add value to a product. The following paper aims to present a proposal of further development of integrated management systems in organizations through the implementation of lean shop floor management. In the first part of the paper, a dynamic model of the implementation steps will be presented. Furthermore, the paper underlines the importance of implementing a lean culture parallel with each step of integrating the lean methods and tools. The paper also describes the Toyota philosophy, tools, and the supporting lean culture necessary to implementing an efficient lean system in productive organizations

Industrial noise level study in a wheat processing factory in ilorin, nigeria

Abstract

An industrial process such as wheat processing generates significant noise which can cause adverse effects on workers and the general public. This study assessed the noise level at a wheat processing mill in Ilorin, Nigeria. A portable digital sound level meter HD600 manufactured by Extech Inc., USA was used to determine the noise level around various machines, sections and offices in the factory at pre-determined distances. Subjective assessment was also mode using a World Health Organization (WHO) standard questionnaire to obtain information regarding noise ratings, effect of noise on personnel and noise preventive measures. The result of the study shows that the highest noise of 99.4 dBA was recorded at a pressure blower when compared to other machines. WHO Class-4 hearing protector is recommended for workers on the shop floor and room acoustics should be upgraded to absorb some sounds transmitted to offices.

An Approach to Diagnosing a Company’s Accident Prevention Status Using Budgets and Dynamic Programming Optimisation

Abstract

Researchers have shown growing interest to accident prevention. Their outcomes have revealed that apart from the physical control efforts, management commitment to funds provision may as well stimulate enhanced safety prevention. While this call has been made in literature to consider the financial matters in safety, the key question about how this concern affects the machining industry remains unanswered. Despite having recognised hazards in a machine tool workshop, requires some financial resources for actions. In order to eliminate mishaps associated with lack of, or poor funds provision or delay to offer financial support to the shop floor when needed, proper analysis for the procedure of safety budget and implementation must be carried out. Drawing on the operations research literature, the dynamic programming technique is shown to optimally assign the right budget to each possible accident case that could occur in the company for prevention purposes. This research offers a path to optimal safety budget on the platform of budgets interaction with accident rate reduction. The optimization is carried out in line with minimum hazard flourishing policy and as well considering the positioning of the machines one to another and the functions of initiation, propagation and termination for the hazards. First, hazards are scouted for and classified using a suitable scale. Dynamic programming is then used to optimally distribute the budget of the company on accident prevention according to the scale that each hazard is classified. The validation of the approach was tested with data obtained from machine tools workshop located in Lagos, Nigeria. The work serves a useful purpose for safety engineers that pursue the efficient planning for operations.
