Introduction Spring barley is the main cereal crop in Ireland accounting for 41% of the area sown with cereals in 2016 ( CSO, 2016 ). The barley produced is used mainly for animal feed but an increasing proportion is used for the production of malt. Fertiliser N is a key input in the production of barley, which affects both grain yield and grain quality. However, a potential problem in such settings is that light exposure of earthquake-related sediments may have been insufficient to fully reset (bleach) the OSL signal prior to deposition ( Cunha et al ., 2009 ; Yang et al ., 2012 ).
