Relative fixed Internet connection speed experiences as antecedents of customer satisfaction and loyalty: An empirical analysis of consumers in Germany

Abstract

So far, management practitioners and scholars alike assume that raises in the contractual absolute maximum bandwidth of Internet connections increase the attitudinal bonds of customers with their access provider. The present study broadens this perspective: In a sample of up to 752 German-speaking Internet users with a wireline Internet access at home, it explores two relative speed characteristics of broadband connections as potential determinants of customer affinity with an access provider. The two reference-dependent aspects comprise customer quality experiences in terms of delivered transmission speeds (1) relative to the maximum down- and upload bandwidths as per customer contract, and (2) relative to speeds emphasized in advertisements of a consumer’s access provider. Furthermore, correlations are analyzed between the frequency with which customers use speed tests to check the quality of their wireline Internet connection and their attitudinal bonds with their access provider. Attitudinal bonding is broken down into customer satisfaction with the performance of the current wireline Internet access at home and propensity to churn at the earliest opportunity. Multivariate regression analysis reveals that the impression that advertised wireline access bandwidths are exaggerated compared to the speeds actually delivered and – to a lesser extent – the perception that the contractual maximum speed is reached only in a low share of a customer’s Internet sessions significantly decrease customer satisfaction and significantly increase customer inclination to churn. The effects of the two speed assessments are not independent of one another: Perceived speed exaggerations in a provider’s ads impair customer bonds less (more) strongly if the experienced share of Internet sessions with speeds below the contractual maximum bandwidth is high (low). More frequent speed testing reduces customer bonding, especially in case that advertised speeds of a customer’s provider are experienced as overblown. The results suggest that wireline Internet access providers can increase the attitudinal bonds with their customers by abstaining from emphasizing maximum speeds in their advertising, which customers rarely reach under standard everyday conditions.

Testing the associations between different aspects of seafarers’ employment contract and on-board internet access and their job and life satisfaction and health

Abstract

The aim of this study was to test for associations between different aspects of contract and on-board internet access and seafarers’ satisfaction and health. Altogether 298 Croatian seafarers, all officers, employed on cargo ships, with a minimum work experience of two years with their current shipping company, participated in an online survey. The questionnaire included sociodemographic items, questions relating to their employment contract and internet access, and measures of job satisfaction, life satisfaction, mental health, and gastrointestinal and cardiovascular symptoms. Their job- and lifesatisfaction levels were higher for shorter duration on board, favourable ratio of work to non-work days, and compliance with the employment contract regarding the changes to work and non-work days. Mental health differed likewise but only in relation to two aspects of the contract: on-board duration and compliance with the contract. The level of gastrointestinal symptoms was lower in cases of shorter on-board duration and compliance with the contract, and in seafarers who have free, unlimited internet access on board. Lower level of cardiovascular symptoms was found in seafarers with free, unlimited internet access on board. Our findings suggest that in promoting satisfaction and health in seafaring, attention should be given to reducing on-board duration, compliance with the contract, and internet accessibility on board.

Internet Coverage and Coverage Bias in Europe: Developments Across Countries and Over Time

Abstract

To estimate the coverage error for web surveys in Europe over time, we analyzed data from the Eurobarometer. The Eurobarometer collects data for the European Community across member and applicant states. Since 2005, the Eurobarometer has contained a straightforward question on Internet access. We compared respondents with and without Internet access and estimated coverage bias for demographic variables (sex, age, length of education) and sociopolitical variables (left-right position on a political scale, life satisfaction). Countries in Europe do differ in Internet penetration and resulting coverage bias. Over time, Internet penetration dramatically increases and coverage bias decreases, but the rate of change differs across countries. In addition, the countries’ development significantly affects the pace of these changes.

The Model for Successful Development of NGA Infrastructure in the Balkans

Abstract

Unavailability of fast broadband internet access, primarily due to the lack of commercial interest of telecommunication operators, is the key reason for economic underdevelopment in rural areas in the Balkans. The process of developing broadband access in rural areas is multifaceted, complex and time-consuming. This paper analyses the current state of availability of broadband access in the Balkan countries, and investigates the algorithm with specific project phases and benefits of stakeholders at the national and local level. The purpose of the paper is to develop the model that rationalizes the implementation process of the broadband internet access projects, and to define the method of selecting an investment model for construction of broadband infrastructure. The results show that the Balkan countries have to start with preparatory activities and studies needed for successful implementation of the given model. This research contributes to stopping demographic and socio-economic degradation in less-developed areas, at the same time encouraging their development.

Mobile Applications - (in) Security Overview

Abstract

Over the last years, there has been a real revolution of mobile devices, which has effectively translated into the exponential increase in internet access rates on a mobile device as opposed to accessing it on desktop systems. Given the growing importance of smartphones, it is important to assess the privacy and security risks of these devices in order to mitigate them. However, as we know, in modern mobile security architecture, applications represent the most critical elements. In this paper we review common mobile applications flaws involving network communications, data storage, user input handling and also exploring a number of vulnerabilities. While applications provide amazing features and benefits for users, they also represent the main attraction for cyber criminals. In order to have a true picture of the mobile security threat spectrum, this article presents the means of how mobile applications can impact systems security, stability and compromise personal data if they are not handled properly.

Performance Analysis of Remote Desktop Virtualization based on Hyper-V versus Remote Desktop Services

Abstract

The fast spread of computer networks and broadband Internet access, and also the development of different operating systems, makes possible to use different virtualization techniques and virtual machines. The release and spread of virtualization platforms makes possible the development of cost-effective information systems that can provide in addition dynamic resource management and simplified system administration.

In this paper we present a comparative performance analysis of Remote Desktop Virtualization based on Hyper-V versus Remote Desktop Services. We introduce system architecture for the two tested scenario and test environment including detailed hardware description.

The main conclusions of the paper are that despite the higher acquisition and maintenance costs, the Remote Desktop Services outperforms the Hyper-V based Remote Desktop Virtualization in memory, CPU and also storage management.

Obstacles, Solutions and Applications for the Development of Modern Wireless Networks

Abstract

This study describes 5G, the latest wireless technology that is currently under development. It will ensure increased bandwidth as well as newer and higher quality antennas. 5G is actually about further developing 4G/LTE. Due to the rapidly growing number of network devices, the current LTE technology will soon be unsatisfactory in terms of quality of service (QoS), therefore a new concept is needed.

The solution to this problem depends on the quality and complexity of the antennas, as well as traffic management. The planned Fifth Generation Network focuses on these issues to provide more accessible, faster, and more reliable services. The new technology will offer a lot of opportunities for IoT compatible devices such as self-driving vehicles or those used in healthcare. In our opinion we will soon achieve a world of unlimited Internet access.
