Introduction HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a retrovirus which infects immune cells, especially CD4 + T lymphocytes, and leads to progressive decay of these cells. CD4 cell count is used as a measure of immune function, and a lower CD4 cell count points to a weaker immune system ( 1 ). The reduction of CD4 + T lymphocytes after HIV infection has several explanations, one of which is that frequent infections in these patients lead to chronic activation of T-lymphocytes that ends with their apoptosis in a process called activation-induced cell death.
