Introduction Petroleum exploration companies had drilled some wells in the Abakaliki Fold Belt in the 1950s and ’60s but had abandoned these because it was thought that magmatic intrusion in the belt did not favour hydrocarbon accumulation. However, in recent times, there has been a resurgence of interest in the search for petroleum in the belt [ 1 ].
