Development of User-friendly Tool for Energy Behavioral Change of Consumers

Abstract

This paper purposes to provide an user-friendly intelligent tool, integrating fuzzy controllers and multi-agent techniques, able to motivate and to support behavioral change of energy end-users, having as main objective to re-define the role of energy consumer in “prosumer” in the context of a reorganized decentralized energy market, now reported to intelligent grids (smart grids). Integration of interactive technologies in a decision support system for microgrids energy management optimizes: functioning from an economical point of view, active control of distributed generation, controlled consumption, loading the storage equipment. The added value of the proposed tool consists of integrating decision theory and artificial intelligence concepts in monitoring and control actions, allowing “prosumers”: to make energy usage data accessible and to demonstrate that energy savings can be achieved without compromising comfort levels.

Evaluation of Binarization Algorithms in Preprocessing of Digital Mammographies

Abstract

Digital mammograms are a useful tool for breast cancer detection. The quality of digital mammogram image can have a negative effect on the computer-aided diagnosis system. We investigate the use of automatic image thresholding methods for microcalcification detection in mammographic images. Experimental results on the BI-RADS 4 images dataset confirm the proposed approach.

Design of Microfluidic Device and Measurements of MPWM for Single Cell /Particle Manipulation

Abstract

A microfluidic device designated for measurement of fluidic flows with different viscosity, necessary within trapping/realising of cells/particles system has been developed. We use a new concept as Microfluidic Pulse Width Modulation (MPWM) for controlling transport of a single cell/particle. The image processing helped the nano-hydraulic volumes/flow rates measurement, through tracking inovative methods with the purpose to build a flow sensor. The device open an unique opportunitie for single cell study with applications in biomedical devices, tools for biochemistry or analytical systems.

Additive Manufacturing as an Important Industry Player for the Next Decades

Abstract

Additive Manufacturing (AM) concerns all classes of materials – polymers, metals, ceramics and glasses as well. For this reason, AM is in the focus of material scientists from all branches. Leaders of the industry realize that the possibilities of 3D printing are endless, and that these possibilities need ways and means to be taken full advantage of. Today, aerospace engineers are using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method for rapid prototyping, part manufacturing, and tooling. They are followed by leaders and engineers from industry (industrial machines, motor vehicles, consumer products, medical/dental) but also from academic institutions and government/military.

Novel High-Performance CVD Coatings for Machining Applications

Abstract

Investigations of hard and wear resistant materials have a long tradition to increase the performance and profitability of machining applications. The evolution started with WC-Co hardmetal alloys, which were produced by PM technology, followed by CVD coatings on hardmetal tools. The first CVD coatings applied were TiC, TiN and Al2O3. The properties of these coatings could be optimized by varying the crystal size, crystal orientation but also combination of the materials in multilayer systems. Nowadays, about 85% of all hardmetal tools are coated.During the last years, driven by PVD coatings showing good performance (e.g. TiAlN), the search for new CVD coatings was intensified. Medium temperature (MT) CVD processes for TiCN allowed the deposition of TiCN crystals with different composition side by side. Due to this microstructure the adhesion between single layers in new multilayer coatings like TiN/MT-TiCN/Al2O3/TiN could be increased. Novel (Ti,Al)N coatings were developed, showing a nanolamellae microstructure consisting of self-assembled (Ti,Al)N with different composition.

For the future there is still plenty to investigate. The already existing coatings and coating systems have to be optimized for the various machining applications. To find new types of CVD coatings, we look for chemical reactions practicable for its use in CVD equipment.

Four-Axis CNC Machine with Microcontroller for Cutting Polystyrene with Hot Wire

Abstract

Numerically controlled machines require precise control, because it is always necessary to know the placement of the effector. Control involves the use of electric motors that can be checked with precision. Therefore stepper motors are preferred. A further advance in stepper control is to incorporate a reaction mechanism for the rotor (for example, an encoder) so as communication is optimal for generating the torque, depending on the position of the rotor. This turns the motor into a servo mechanism with very high torque and very good position resolution. An advance in this technique is to operate the motor in a closed loop only if the error of rotor positioning becomes too high. This will allow the system to avoid oscillation while searching for a position, a problem that commonly occurs with servos. The supervision of a numerically controlled tool is limited to the control of electric motors that actuate mechanical assemblies. Control can be implemented by using specialized integrated circuits or microcontrollers. This paper presents a numerically controlled (CNC) machine with microcontroller.
