The perception of readiness for teaching profession: a case of pre-service trainees

Abstract

Pre-service teacher training offers various opportunities for trainees to become aware of and understand the qualities of good teaching. Towards the end of their training they should be able to identify clearly the criteria for measuring their readiness for teaching profession as well as identify their own strong and weak areas.

The author of this article presents the results of the study where the aim was to focus on the trainees′ perception of themselves as English language teachers based on the criteria of the EPOSTL at the end of their training when trainees receive their diploma for teaching the English language.

Novice Teachers of English as a Foreign Language in the Czech Republic and their Drop-Out Intentions

Abstract

Problems with staffing play a crucial role among factors influencing the quality of English language teaching at Czech primary and lower secondary schools. Since 1990 the shortage of teachers of English as a foreign language has been repeatedly reported by the Czech School Inspectorate. The shortage is largely caused by the reluctance of English language teacher education study programme graduates to accept teaching positions at primary and lower secondary schools. A drop-out syndrome in the early stages of the teachers’ career is another factor that may contribute to the lack of teachers of English. Unfortunately, it has not been researched in the Czech Republic and it has not been systematically monitored by the state. In the research study focusing on novice teacher drop-out, conducted in 2015–2017, we deal with the process of socialisation of novice teachers in schools and with external factors that influence the socialisation and that can be seen as predictors of novice teachers’ decision to stay in their current school or leave either the school or the teaching profession. The current paper presents partial findings related to drop-out intentions of novice teachers of English as a foreign language in comparison with teachers of other subjects. Our findings indicate that drop-out intentions are more frequent in teachers of English as a foreign language than for other teachers and that teachers of English evaluate their cooperation with colleagues and leadership at their schools more critically than other teachers.

One of the challenges which an arts‟ professor faces in the XXIth century is “the need to refresh”. Therefore, it is essential to find out efficient teaching-learning methods which imply the creative involvement of the students, in order to get an organic learning as a result, but also in order to provoke a superior degree of responsibility towards the process itself and, last but not least, towards their future profession. That‟s why we chose to work with a group of students based on the theatre-laboratory system, they getting involved in every step, from the choice of the text to the improvisation, until the making of the final show.

The importance and utility of physical exercise in the life style of the artists has inspired us to write this paper through which we address the people from this field who want to start their own business. We launch this idea in order to provide employees a space for sports activities inside the company. A program of varied physical activity introduced as a break in the work program is an important element in the improvement of the human and professional resources. In this paper we describe: types of spaces equipped for physical exercises, work programs and several reasons that sustain the idea that a recreation back is very useful in the utility artistic professions of the modern world.

The Importance of Intercultural Communicative Competences for Tourism Labour Market: Students’ Views and their Self-Assessment

Abstract

The present paper is founded on two pillars. Firstly, it is one of the current trends in education worldwide, i.e. to connect theory and practice. Secondly, it is the need to be interculturally competent speakers of a foreign language in today’s globalized world of massive migration flows and signs of increasing ethnocentrism. Based upon these two requirements, the ability to communicate in a FL effectively and interculturally appropriately in the tourism industry is a must, since being employed in whichever of its sectors means encountering other cultures on a daily basis. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to find out undergraduate tourism students’ opinion on the importance of intercultural communicative competences for their future profession as well as their self-assessment in the given field. The findings of the research, which are to be compared to employers’ needs, revealed that there is considerable difference between the respondents’ views on the significance of the investigated issues and their self-esteem.

4. The Feldenkrais Method in the Puppeteer’s Training from the Perspective of Nicolas Gousseff’s Handheld Puppets Workshops

Abstract

Although the Feldenkrais method is quite well-known and used in relation to dance, music, and acting, it is rather uncommon to associate it with animation theatre. The puppeteer’s art is a profession that requires motor skills and sustained physical effort, which demands that the animating actor has an extended consciousness of oneself and of the space. Therefore, the Feldenkrais method can be a useful instrument in the puppeteer’s education and training, as the placing of the body in a relaxed stance, one which helps in the management of pain and effort, facilitates the conscious and creative learning of animation techniques, with an emphasis on the coordination and fluidity of movement. These are learning principles of the art of animation that are successfully used by Nicolas Gousseff, an artist that was formed at ESNAM (École Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette de la Charleville-Mézières), and who has specialized in handheld puppets and using the actor’s body as a performative space for this type of animation.

Cyberbullying as a negative result of cyber-culture of Slovak children and adolescents: selected research findings

Abstract

Cyber-culture points out the life in cyberspace and goes beyond national cultures. It is particularly attractive for the young people who use Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to express their attitudes, values, beliefs and thinking. Those do not need to be necessarily in accordance with the standards of an individual society. Cyberculture becomes dangerous. Great risk lies in cyberbullying that represents negative impact of cyber-culture on human behavior. The aim of the study is to detect cyberbullying as a negative impact of cyber-culture among of Slovak children and adolescents. The research was carried out on a sample of 1619 11-18-year old respondents (average age was 14.51). Results of cyberbullying research carried out using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) have proved the appropriateness of 3-latent-class module. Relative entropy of the module reached 0.915. It was demonstrated that 52.9% of respondents belonged to the group of uninvolved, 42.7% were victims and 4.4% were victims-aggressors. Being a negative consequence of cyber-culture, cyberbullying is a challenge that educators - including other assisting professions - face when educating children and adolescents to orientate in cyberspace, behave responsibly, express themselves in a way that would not interfere others’ integrity and identity (personal and virtual). The Dialectics of Industrial Design viz-a-viz The Meta – Design Phenomenon: The on-Going Narrative / Implications for New Design Paradigms and Design Education

Abstract

The paper examined the dialectics and the Philosophical Theorization of the Phenomenon of Industrial design viz-a-viz meta-design, both as new areas of the philosophical discourse and intellectualization of both fields. This is not only as new subject disciplines / profession but also as New/Novel, and “uncharted waters” in the study and philosophy of both. Which is aimed at their adoption as a veritable tool and vehicle, for achieving New and innovative franchises and enterprises that might thus help bring about creating potentially New Design paradigms. In the body of the text it was established that by employing interdisciplinarity and collaborative efforts / approaches, designers try to achieve these New design efforts which are inspired by the way living organisms, systems and mechanisms, function and work. This eventually will influence, change or completely overhaul the way we feed, cloth ourselves, shelter, communicate or even co-habit in the future. The paper also established that the implications of the above will help engender a new narrative in the discussions and reasoning (or the dialectics) of these two disciplines and also of how they will affect the subjects practice and the various attempts aimed at its Pedagogy /Education. It was also established that the nature of such an Education and the Impartation of the adequate Design skills to graduates must adopt New strategies and implementation of an Industrial/Technological-based subject-Bias that leans towards Design intuitiveness, ingenious Technical/Technologically result oriented reasoning and practices. Bearing in mind the infusion also of various multidisciphinary subject areas that will help broaden the learner’s horizon. The paper recommends that the issue of the Dialectics and phenomenology of Industrial Design/Meta design (which is the philosophical study of the structure and makeup (or consciousness) of the concepts, context and content of industrial design) must be embedded in the implementation of the three conceptual Approaches of Design which are:-Design Awareness, Design Activity and Design Manufacture/fabrication. This is the sum total of all Design and Creative endeavours.
