Abstract

A special study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the effects of pesticide treatment on tobacco in comparison with tobacco not treated with any pesticide. For the purpose of growing these tobaccos, experimental plots were selected on Prince Edward Island, Canada, where contamination of air, soil and water was at a minimum. The tobacco leaf was analyzed for 35 components and 28 pesticide residues. These samples are to be used for smoke analysis and bioassay. The results will be reported in a later publication.

Abstract

The methods currently used for the determination of pesticide residues on tobacco are compared to one another, and a new method is described which results from a combination of extraction and clean-up of the extract. For that purpose, a modified Soxhlet extractor is used which serves at the same time as clean-up column. The comparison to other methods shows clear advantages as regards saving of analysis time and consumption of solvents.

Abstract

Sissons and Telling's (18) method for the simultaneous determination of water-soluble organophosphoric pesticides in vegetables has been successfully applied to tobacco. With this method monocrotophos, dicrotophos, dimethoate, formothion, methyl demeton-S-methyl, mevinphos, paraoxonmethyl, phosphamidon and trichlorphon can be quantitatively analysed speedily and with good recoveries.
