Effects of story mapping on third-grade students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of story mapping on the reading comprehension scores, on-task behaviors, and attitudes of third- -grade students (N = 6) with ADHD. Students’ reading grade equivalencies were assessed before and after the study. The teacher-researcher compared two other achievement measures before and during story mapping to assess growth. The practical difference in scores as calculated with Cohen’s d revealed that story mapping was successful in improving students’ comprehension. On tests from the reading basal, students’ scores improved an average of 16.00%, while tests from a computerized reading program improved 20.00%. Students exhibited on-task behavior 79.33% of the time and positive attitudes 82.33% of the time during the intervention. The implications of this study are important in determining effective instructional strategies to promote the active engagement of students and combat the core symptoms of ADHD.

Effects of physical activity on the quality of life among adult women

Abstract

Aim: the purpose of our study was to analyze the effect of a physical activity program on the quality of life of adult women. Methods: The study involved 95 adult women from Oradea, practitioners of physical exercises in a fitness center. Period of the study: February 2015 - June 2016. Anthropometric measurements were made (height, weight) and it was calculated the body mass index (BMI). The SF-36 short form questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life. The physical activity program consisted of Step - aerobics, Pilates and strength training in the gym, 3 times a week for 60-90 minutes, for 12 months.

Results: BMI revealed that of the 95 women enrolled in the initial evaluation 71% were normal weight, 16% were overweight, 8% underweight, 4% obese class I and 1% obese class II. At the final assessment 74% were normal weight, 13% were overweight, 9% underweight, 4% obese class I and no one had class II obesity. The analysis of the answers to the questionnaire revealed the following: the initial average quality of life score was 85.01 and the final score was 89.40; the initial average score of the physical health component was 87.54 and the final score was 92.10; the initial average score of the mental health component was 82.48 and the final score was 86.69.

Conclusion: Applying the physical activity program for 12 months led to an improvement in the quality of life, so we can conclude that practicing physical exercise on a regular basis has the effect of increasing the quality of life.

Investigating the Effect of Teaching Aesthetic Skills to Faculty Members on Development of Their Effective Teaching Performance1

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study investigated the effect of teaching aesthetic skills to faculty members on development of their effective teaching performance through a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample included 32 faculty members at a major Iranian university who were divided into the experimental (11 participants) and control groups (21 participants). The experimental group was taught to use aesthetic skills in the teaching and learning processes; however, no intervention was applied to the control group. To evaluate the effective teaching performance of the faculty members, a tailor-made questionnaire was used in two pretest and posttest stages, where randomly chosen students were asked to express their opinions about the faculty membersí performance. The sample size of the students was 1096 in the pretest stage and 935 in the posttest stage. Paired t-test results showed that there was no significant difference between the mean effective teaching scores of the faculty members in the control group in the pretest stage and in the posttest stage. However, the mean effective teaching scores of the faculty members in the experimental group were found to be significantly higher in the posttest. In addition, although there was no significant difference between the mean effective teaching scores of the two faculty groups in the pretest, faculty members in the experimental group outperformed their counterparts in the control group. Based on the findings, applying aesthetic skills by faculty members in the teaching and learning processes can pave the way for sustainable development of their effective teaching performance. Therefore, faculty members are recommended to acquire the required knowledge and skills to better use aesthetic skills in the teaching process.

The rehabilitation management after hip arthroplasty: a case report

Abstract

Aim: In this paper we describe the physical therapy management of a 64-year-old female following a bilateral hip arthroplasty. Method: The patient featured in this study, after the surgical intervention had undergone specific recovery treatment consisting of: posture techniques, static (isometric contractions) and dynamic kinetic techniques (passive motion, passive-actives, actives, actives with resistance), massage, respiratory gymnastics and reeducation of walking. Results: At the end of the rehabilitation program, hip muscular strength and joint range of motion were improved significantly. The Harris hip score was significantly improved, in comparison to the preoperative one. Conclusion: This case illustrates the importance of the rehabilitation management after bilateral hip replacement.

The development of a new method of idiographic measurement for dynamic assessment intervention

Abstract

This paper proposes a new method of idiographic measurement for dynamic assessment (DA) intervention. There are two main methods of measurement for DA intervention; split -half tests and integrated scoring systems. Split-half tests of ability have proved useful from a research perspective. Integrated scoring systems coupled with case studies are useful from a practitioner perspective. The purpose of this research is to bridge the gap between research and practice by developing a methodology that is compatible with both. To this end the paper proposes a measureable idiographic method of measurement, which utilises multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) and general procrustean analysis (GPA) to analyse the result of card-sort data gathered from a learner across the entire intervention. This approach provides a method of assessment, which is both compatible with individual intervention and suited to building a body of evidence-based research for DA. An example of the method in practice is given for illustrative purposes. The initial results suggest that this approach provides a methodology that satisfies the requirements of both practitioners when formulating targeted intervention and researchers who require methods of measurement of change in ability of the individual over time.

Pilot Testing of It Skills of Preschool and Elementary Education Students by the It Fitness Test

Abstract

The present paper reports on the testing of digital skills of students of the Faculty of Education, Univerity of Presov within their undergraduate training with the aim to estimate the level of digital skills in five defined domains. The IT Fitness test 2015 consisting of 25 items was used as the measure of the target skills. The sample comprised 532 students in bachelor and master study programs. The paper provides an interpretation of the selected research findings (mean total scores, mean scores for the given domains, discrimination power of items and domains). The results of digital skills testing point at the overall overestimation of Digital Natives Skills. With respect to the challenges brought by the educational practice itself by means of the implementation of digital technologies into pre-primary and primary education, it is necessary to modify the curricula of math- and iT-oriented subjects and include further activities allowing for the development of the lacking “Digital Skills”, since these are needed not only for students′ own study but also due to increasing demands related to the use of digital technologies in primary and pre-primary education.
