The experiment was performed during the European Ironman Championship held in Frankfurt (Germany) in 2012. All participants completed the Ironman race with times ranging from 09:08:15 (hh:mm:ss) to 11:40:10. Weather conditions during the race were as follows: average temperature: 21 o C (range 15-27), humidity: 63% (range 19-94), wind speed: 8 km/h, rain 1 mm

increasing cardiovascular capacity. As it has been previously stated, the MTHFR gene encodes 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, one of the crucial enzymes in the single-carbon fragments metabolism i.e. conversion of homocysteine to methionine. The C677T TT as well as A1298C CC homozygotes have been shown to have a decreased enzymatic activity as well as significantly elevated plasma homocysteine levels ( Castro et al., 2003 , 2004 ; Frosst et al., 1995 ). Other studies that have analyzed 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase activity found that individuals

exposure time (3 min), the mean perceived thermal sensation score was 5.7, which indicates a “cool” sensation. Therefore, a 3-min exposure at –130 °C did not appear to add unnecessary strain for the majority of the athletes during the competition phase. The maximum score of perceived thermal sensation (coldest sensation = 10) was reached only at 180 s in one subject. The majority of the participants did not feel especially cold after the end of the exposure. Nevertheless, at 30 s, three participants reported relatively high perceived thermal sensation scores (≥6), and
