Basic Problems and Solution of the Encapsulation of a Low-Voltage Spark Gap with Arc Splitter Chamber

The main disadvantage of horn spark gaps resulting from the blow-out of hot ionised gases in case of lightning impulse and follow currents is discussed for modern and compact DIN rail mounted arresters. The technical problems of fully encapsulated horn spark gaps are revealed. Based on technical specifications, basic calculations for the required arc voltages and the thermal loads were made in advance for dimensioning the arc splitter chamber and the arc area of the spark gap. A method to fully encapsulate such spark gaps is proposed and its efficiency is described based on experiments with different arrangements and loads.

Electrospun Thermoplastic Polyurethane Mats Containing Naproxen– Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex

Abstract

Incorporation of cyclodextrins (CDs) into electrospun nanofibrous materials can be considered as potential candidates for functional medical textile applications. Naproxen (NAP) is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug commonly administered for the treatment of pain, inflammation and fever. Drug-inclusion complex formation with CDs is an approach to improve the aqueous solubility via molecular encapsulation of the drug within the cavity of the more soluble CD molecule. In this study, NAP or different NAP-CD inclusion complexes loaded nanofibres were successfully produced through electrospinning and characterised. The inclusion complex loaded mats exhibited significantly faster release profiles than NAP-loaded thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) mats. Overall, NAP-inclusion complex loaded TPU electrospun nanofibres could be used as drug delivery systems for acute pain treatments since they possess a highly porous structure that can release the drug immediately.

Architectural approach to cope with network-induced problems in network control systems design

Abstract

In the field of process control engineering, network-based systems enable extensive, flexible and scalable applications in industrial automation and control. However, network-induced problems are influencing the stability and performance and they are introducing constraints in the system design and operation. While most of the existing design methodologies are searching for the specific solution within the domain of the control theory, we propose the comprehensive architectural approach that addresses wide range of the network-related issues and copes with them in the effective way. Presented solution combines several architectural styles encapsulating the actuating, sensing and control functionality into the unified service-oriented components, while the data transport is supported through event-triggered distributed middleware components. Given architectural approach decouples the design of process control functionality from the properties of the control network infrastructure. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is verified through the analysis of the system operation in the given case-study.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV): Searching a Path in the Flexible Manufacturing Systems

Manufacturing systems are undergoing a noticeable evolution due to an intense technological progress in industrial robotics. Serial production has evolved into the concept of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS), which encapsulate processes in automatic equipment that are capable of executing different operations, that before be performed in several stages and diverse equipments. Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems have been frequently used as material handling equipment in manufacturing systems since the last two decades. Particularly, AGV's with trailers are, and will continue to be, the backbone of the material transport industry. The use of these systems has taken the attention of experts and researchers. They are numerous studies concerning AGV with trailers systems in literature; few of them deal with the adaptation of these systems into FMS. In this paper, a study of the trajectories and a simulation model of a hypothetical system, which included a FMS environment, were developed. In addition, a potential field's method was explored in order to improve the ability of detecting obstacles in AGV's with trailers moving through stations.
