Effect of weight reduction on histological activity and fibrosis of lean nonalcoholic steatohepatitis patient

is a potent independent issue for both the development and regression of NAFLD in non-obese individuals, regardless of baseline BMI. [ 17 ] As none of the study focused on the benefits of weight reduction on histological activity in patients with lean NASH, the study was focused to explore the effect of weight reduction strategy in lean NASH individuals. Materials and methods Design, subjects of the study This prospective study was confined to the Department of Hepatology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Data collection was done within

A hypothetical approach on gender differences in cancer diagnosis

malignant tumors, we are still unable to explain this intriguing gender-related phenomenon today. It is even proposed to focus on the healthy individuals rather than patients carrying malignant neoplasms to clarify specific molecular features, which could prevent the development of malignancies and provide protection against invasive cancers. [ 5 ] Indeed, two of three humans remain unaffected from this devastating disease. Numerous autopsy studies have reported a high prevalence of incidental cancer cases in people who died of other causes, [ 6 , 7 , 8 ] altogether

Hypoxia-inducible factor may induce the development of liver fibrosis in Budd–Chiari syndrome by regulating CD248/endosialin expression: A hypothesis

248/endosialin mRNA was higher in carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis mice than in normal mice. In addition, immunofluorescent staining analysis demonstrated that the number of CD248 + cells was higher in cirrhotic patient liver tissues than in healthy human liver tissues. Similarly, the number of CD248+ cells was also higher in carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis mouse liver tissues than in normal mouse liver tissues. Taken together, both studies suggested a close relationship between CD248/endosialin and development of liver fibrosis. Hypoxia

Development of Acute Peritonitis after Gynecological Procedure in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient

Abstract

Although the majority of peritonitis cases in peritoneal (PD) dialysis patients are caused by gram-positive cocci, streptococcus agalactiae, a gram-positive group B β haemoliticus streptococcus, may rarely be found in this group of patients. We present a case of acute peritonitis caused by streptococcus agalactiae with bacteriemia and septic shock occurring after a curettage indicated because of gynecologic bleeding. The patient did not receive antimicrobial prophylaxis since the gynecologist considered this case as a "routine" procedure without the need to administer antibiotics. Our case demonstrate that small procedures may cause great problems and therefore one should always give priority to individual approach regardless of the protocol for "routine" surgery, especially if there are no indications for the emergency procedure

Predisposing factors for chemotherapy-induced nephrotoxicity in patients with advanced esophageal cancer who received combination chemotherapy with docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil

our study, renal dysfunction was therefore defined as a Ccr of less than 60 mL/min, and the patients were classified into 2 groups: patients with nephrotoxicity and patients without nephrotoxicity. To accurately predict the development of nephrotoxicity, we analyzed the data for the course of treatment in which nephrotoxicity developed in patients with nephrotoxicity and the data during the final course of chemotherapy in patients without nephrotoxicity. Statistical analysis Univariate analysis was performed to determine explanatory variables. Categorical data

Hepatic encephalopathy in liver cirrhosis

. Moreover, the severe cases of liver cirrhosis seem to evolve into hepatic encephalopathy; that is why patients’ neurological examination, intracranial pressure and coagulogram should be systematically monitored. The combination of alcohol and viral hepatitis aetiologies catalyzed the appearance of conjoint encephalopathy and cardiomyopathy symptoms such as arrhythmias. Viral liver cirrhosis (HBV, HCV) cases triggered the appearance of hepatic encephalopathy and the development of cardiac complication, while alcoholic cirrhosis was associated with arrhythmia events.[ 8
