A comparison of the influence of two alloy pre-treatments and temperature treatments on the formation and composition of zirconium based conversion coating on the AA2024 alloy has been performed. The investigation employed mass changes, atomic force microscopy (AFM), XRD dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and electrochemical tests by open circuit potential (OCP) measurements. Pre-treatment using only alkaline etching is called alkaline pre-treatment. When alkaline etching is followed by de-oxidization in a phosphoric acid solution the process is called acidic pre-treatment. Conversion coatings were formed in Pragokor BL. IR analysis revealed the formation of a phosphate on the alloy surface. EDX analysis showed Mg dissolution. The Zr content increased with the temperature of the conversion coating formation. Both pre-treatment methods provided a phosphate layer on the alloy surface.
The adsorption and inhibitive behavior of gums obtained from Mangifera indica tree was investigated at 303-333 K using weight loss and linear polarization measurements. The results obtained from both measurements showed that Mangifera indica gums inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl. Linear polarization measurements revealed Mangifera indica gums to inhibit both the anodic and cathodic reactions on the surface of the mild steel thereby functioning as a mixed-type inhibitor. Adsorption behavior of the gums were approximated by the isotherm models of Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin. The adsorption mechanism derived from the trend in inhibition efficiency as a function of temperature as well as kinetic and activation parameters signified Mangifera indica gums adsorbed on the surface of the mild steel through the mechanism of physisorption and that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous.

The inhibition of mild steel corrosion in 1.0 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4 by Cissus populnea stem extract was investigated using weight loss measurements in the temperature range of 303 – 333 K. Results from the study revealed that Cissus populnea stem extract inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in both acid media. Inhibition efficiency of the stem extract increased with increase in the extract concentration but decreased with immersion time. The kinetics of the reaction aligned with a first order type. Thermodynamics investigations showed that Cissus populnea extract is adsorbed on the steel surface through physical interactions, and the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models best described the adsorption mechanism of the stem extract on the steel surface.

In the Faculty of Science (University of Hradec Králové) the innovative program in chemistry for the study specialization Physico-technical Measurements and Computer Technology was developed. The innovation of chemistry filed study has been focused especially on increase in competitiveness and in graduates employment. Design of innovation enables graduates applying for the position of experts in physical measurements and informatics and at the same time they expand their competence in the service of the physico-chemical instrumentation in industrial ecology. Because Faculty of Science is not equipped yet in expensive instrumentation for nuclear spectrometry, cross-border cooperation with the Faculty of Natural and Technical Sciences (University of Opole) has been started. In the area of teaching about non-traditional energy sources the cross-border cooperation with the Department of Automation and Renewable Energy Sources, Faculty of Electrical Engineering (Czestochowa University of Technology) has been initiated. Well-developed system of cooperation with companies, which are equipped with the latest technology of environmental protection, was created. In the exchange system Polish students attended for practicing in these companies. The aim of the contribution is to describe one of the means of innovation of chemistry field study in the frame of bachelor study specialization oriented in physics and computer technology. We believe that the new approach will lead to increase in graduate competitiveness as well as to development of their motivation to study and better understanding of regulation principles of chemical processes and patterns.

Intercalation of sodium into the carbon lining of aluminium electrolysis cells is a common cause of its failure. The effect of sodium on model carbon cathode materials was studied in the system with high activity of sodium (molten NaF–NaCl system). Commercially available carbon materials such as semigraphite and electrographite (Kompozitum, Topol’čany, SK) were chosen as model cathodes. The experiments were carried out at a constant cathode current density of 0.7 A cm−2. A modified Rapoport test was developed and used to study the expansion of the chosen types of carbon materials.
