Estimation of heavy metals in medicinal plants and their infusions

Abstract

Medicinal plants and their extracts deserve special attention because of the important influence they have to human health. There are easily contaminated with metals during growth, development and processing. The aim of this study was to achieve the quantitative determination of metallic elements (Cu, Cr, Cd, Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb) in some medicinal plants including Mentha piperita L., Matricaria camomilla L., Hypericum perforatum L., Achillea millefolium L., Thymus serpillum, Capsella-bursa-pastoris L., Urtica dioica L., Primula veris L., Plantago major L., Taraxacum officinalis L., and their infusions, using flame absorption spectrometry. The highest concentration of metal in medicinal plants was that of iron 333.22 ± 35.18 mg Kg-1 and zinc 244.90 ± 32.13 mg Kg-1. Metal content in the powdered medicinal plants was in descending order: Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr; Pb and Cd were present in minor amounts. Analysis of plant infusions showed transfer of heavy metals during extraction procedure. Monitoring the content of mineral elements in medicinal plants and their boiling water extracts is of high importance because some heavy metals in large quantities in the body may have a toxic effect.

The effect of sewage sludge composts and potato pulp on uptaking of macroelements by the grain and straw of the spring triticale

Taking into consideration the acid pH soil, high content of potassium in relation to nitrogen and phosphorus and the insignificant quantity of heavy metals in the potato pulp and the slight alkaline pH soil as well, high amount of nitrogen and phosphorus in relation to potassium in the municipal sewage sludge, the experiment was carried out in order to define the effect of composts from these waste on uptaking macroelements by the grain and the straw of the Wanad variety spring triticale.

The vegetative - pot experiment was carried out on the brown incomplete soil of the slight acid pH (pHKCl 6,1), of the granulometric composition of slight loam (V complex), an average content of available forms of phosphorus and potassium and a high content of magnesium.

The obtained results show that the grain and the straw of spring trticale took distinctly more macroelements under the influence the fertilization of the composts with the municipal sewage sludge (30%) and the potato pulp (30%) in comparison with the composts with the 60% participation of the potato pulp. The supplementary mineral fertilization which was used against in comparison to composts, increased uptaking the macroelements by the tested plant. The double dose of composts and mineral fertilizers visibly increased nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, cooper, magnesium and sulphur absorbance by the grain and the straw of spring trticale in comparison with the series with a single dose of composts and a supplementary mineral fertilization.

Mineral Oil Drinking Water Pollution Accident in Slavonski Brod, Croatia

Zagađenje pitke vode mineralnim uljima u slavonskom brodu

21. rujna 2008. godine u Slavonskom Brodu dolazi do prodora mazuta iz toplinskih podstanica u toplovode, zatim u cijevi koje vode toplu vodu do slavina za toplu i hladnu vodu u stanovima. Cilj je ovog rada prikazati tijek događaja zbog nezgode i postupke koji bi se mogli primijeniti u eventualnim sličnim situacijama.

Kemijski parametri "A"-analize definirani Pravilnikom o zdravstvenoj ispravnosti vode za piće (Narodne novine 47/08) određeni su spektrofotometrijskim i titrimetrijskim metodama, dok su mikrobiološki pokazatelji analizirani metodama membranske filtracije i određivanja ukupnog broja bakterija. Za analizu mineralnih ulja upotrijebljena je metoda infracrvene spektroskopije. Epidemiološku obradu stanovnika proveli su epidemiolozi. Ispiranje vodovodnih cijevi obavljeno je vodom i detergentom BIS O 2700.

Nezgoda prodora mazuta u pitku vodu trajala je od 21. rujna do početka studenoga 2008. godine. Razlog nastanka nezgode jest kvar izmjenjivača za toplu vodu u toplinskim podstanicama koji je prouzročio miješanje vode iz toplovoda u kojem ima i mazuta, s toplom vodom za stanove na slavinama.

U tom su razdoblju analizirana ukupno 192 uzorka vode: 174 uzorka na "A"-analizu, 192 uzorka na mineralna ulja te 5 uzoraka na policikličke aromatske ugljikovodike (PAH) i aromatske ugljikovodike: benzen, toluen, etilbenzen i ksilen (BTEX). Mineralna ulja bila su prisutna iznad maksimalno dopuštene koncentracije (MDK) u 55 uzoraka vode, "A"-analiza nije odgovarala u dva slučaja, a PAH i BTEX bili su ispod MDK.

Za uspješnost rješavanja ovakvih situacija potreban je multidisciplinarni pristup s jasnim ovlastima svih institucija.

The concentration of heavy metals in soils around the wetlands of the Ina valley near Sławęcin / Koncentracja metali ciężkich w glebach mokradeł doliny Iny koło Sławęcina

Abstract

Wetlands around the upper part of the Ina valley are the area of great natural value, free from negative industrial impact. In the possible sources of contamination, we could include herbicides and artificial fertilisers from fields and meadows or municipal waste discharge from a small town Recz and local farms. The soils of wetlands, situated in the left part of the Ina valley near Sławęcin, were studied. Four characteristic profiles were made, from which soil samples were collected for laboratory analysis. In the soil samples, the content of organic matter and reaction in 1 mol KCl·dm-3 were determined, whereas in mineral horizons, granulometric composition and the concentration of total and exchangeable forms of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Co, Zn, Fe). As a result of conducted studies, it was found that the soils of wetlands in the Ina valley near Sławęcin, do not exhibit contamination with heavy metals but their greater accumulation was observed in the surface muck layers than in fen peat and lower lying sediments.
