Dinesh Bhugra: a personal history of Psychiatry

Abstract

In the past 40 years, the practice of psychiatry has changed dramatically from asylums to community care to personalized home-based treatments. The personal history of working in various settings and changing NHS indicates that an ability to change one’s clinical practice is a critical skill. Being a migrant and an International Medical Graduate brings with it certain specific challenges. Personal histories provide a very specific account that is inherently incomplete and perhaps biased, but personal accounts also give history a tinge that academic accounts cannot. In this account, changes in the NHS have been discussed with regards to changes in clinical care of patients with psychiatric disorders as well as research and training.

Theorem from My Life with Psychology

Abstract

A concise autohistoric view of the scientific psychological activity in the Slovak Academy of Sciences during the socialist totalitarian regime, and following the rebirth of democracy. Dominant experimental-laboratory psychology was then followed by empiric-life psychology. Some of the main results from both research approaches are presented, as well as theoretical-methodological syntheses. At present, the author focuses on „oral psychology” because it helps in interpreting the real development of psychology in Czecho-Slovakia. We propose to complement the international symposiums „Child in need” with similar events in the context of „Child in cultivation”.

Practical Education in Secondary Educational Institutions for Teachers’ Training

Abstract

Between 1950 and 1959, teacher training in secondary schools meant an education to last for four years followed by a specified final exam and a practice period of one year. Trainee teachers were subsequently expected to take a qualifying exam. The objective of the investigation is to present and analyse the forms and the documents related to the regulation in practical training. In the course of the essay we will go into details concerning the difficulties and problems in organising practical training as well as the issue whether the vocational training allowed to contribute to develop trainee teachers’ expertise. The use of primary sources such as curricula and regulations were included during the investigation.
