Abstract

The cable-pulley system is widely used for its advantages. In this paper, application of a new algorithm for the calculation of cables on pulleys is presented. Unlike other algorithms, this algorithm enables to take the magnitude of the radius of each pulley into account. This new algorithm is implemented in the RFEM program because of its higher accuracy and efficiency. Comparison of the commonly used algorithm, which ignores pulley radius, and the new algorithm is presented.

Abstract

This paper deals with the limit load solutions for SEN(T) specimens under plane stress and plane strain conditions. The existing solutions are verified using the Finite Element Method and extended to 3D cases. The numerical results can be used to assess the strength of a structural element with a defect. This paper is a verification and extension of the author’s previous paper [2].

Abstract

An unsteady magnetohydromagnetic natural convection on the Couette flow of electrically conducting water at 4°C (Pr = 11.40) in a rotating system has been considered. A Finite Element Method (FEM) was employed to find the numerical solutions of the dimensionless governing coupled boundary layer partial differential equations. The primary velocity, secondary velocity and temperature of water at 4°C as well as shear stresses and rate of heat transfer have been obtained for both ramped temperature and isothermal plates. The results are independent of the mesh (grid) size and the present numerical solutions through the Finite Element Method (FEM) are in good agreement with the existing analytical solutions by the Laplace Transform Technique (LTT). These are shown in tabular and graphical forms.

Abstract

The finite element method (FEM) is developed for coupled thermoelastic crack problems if material properties are continuously varying. The weak form is utilized to derive the FEM equations. In conventional fracture theories the state of stress and strain at the crack tip vicinity is characterized by a single fracture parameter, namely the stress intensity factor or its equivalent, J-integral. In the present paper it is considered also the second fracture parameter called as the T-stress. For evaluation of both fracture parameters the quarter-point crack tip element is developed. Simple formulas for both fracture parameters are derived comparing the variation of displacements in the quarter-point element with asymptotic expression of displacement at the crack tip vicinity. The leading terms of the asymptotic expansions of fields in the crack-tip vicinity in a functionally graded material (FGM) are the same as in a homogeneous one with material coefficients taken at the crack tip.

Abstract

This paper contains results of transient analysis of airflow around the ACSR power line cross-section in unsymmetric multi-span. The forces applied to the power line are obtained from CFD simulations, where the wind induced vibration is studied. Effect of these forces to the maximal displacement of the power line and the maximal mechanical forces in the points of attachment are studied and evaluated.

Abstract

The evaluation of disk brake squeal is nowadays performed using Finite Element Model. In this standard procedure the thermal effects are omitted. The omission is done because of long computing time of fully coupled brake system thermo-structural transient analysis. This paper is presenting an effective uncoupled thermo-structural FEM procedure. This method is applied on a pin-on-disc system and its time effectiveness is compared to standard full coupled transient analysis.

Abstract

The article presents numerical simulations of the dynamic wind loads on the structure of a building designed on a cliff in Gdynia. The results obtained from the two methods: Davenport’s and Karman’s are compared. The results allowed a comparison of the two methods, and they provided an answer to the question how a construction, designed in such an unusual condition of a cliff behaves under the influence of the gusting wind. The wind spectrum is presented and compared in both directions: of the X-axis and of the Y-axis. The dynamic calculations are carried out in the Abaqus software. The conducted numerical analyses compare the displacements in two points - at half height of the building and at the top - obtained by the two methods.

Abstract

The following research focuses on the dynamic analysis of impact of the high-speed train induced vibrations on the structures located near railway tracks. The office complex chosen as the subject of calculations is located in the northern part of Poland, in Gdańsk, in the proximity of Pendolino, the high speed train route. The high speed trains are the response for the growing needs for a more efficient railway system. However, with a higher speed of the train, the railway induced vibrations might cause more harmful resonance in the structures of the nearby buildings. The damage severity depends on many factors such as the duration of said resonance and the presence of additional loads. The studies and analyses helped to determinate the method of evaluating the impact of railway induced vibrations on any building structure. The dynamic analysis presented in the research is an example of a method which allows an effective calculation of the impact of vibrations via SOFISTIK program.

Abstract

An analysis is made to study a three dimensional MHD boundary layer flow and heat transfer due to a porous axisymmetric shrinking sheet. The governing partial differential equations of momentum and energy are transformed into self similar non-linear ordinary differential equations by using the suitable similarity transformations. These equations are, then solved by using the variational finite element method. The flow phenomena is characterised by the magnetic parameter M, suction parameter S, porosity parameter Kp, heat source/sink parameter Q, Prandtl number Pr, Eckert number Ec and radiation parameter Rd. The numerical results of the velocity and temperature profiles are obtained and displayed graphically.

The vibration characteristics of stiffened plates with cutouts subjected to in-plane partial edge loadings at one end at the plate boundaries are studied using the finite element method. Buckling loads and vibration frequencies are determined for different cutout ratios and extent of partial edge loading at one end. In the structural modelling, the plate and the stiffeners are treated as separate elements where the compatibility between these two types of elements is maintained. The main elegance of the formulation lies in the treatment of the stiffeners. The stiffeners can be placed anywhere within the plate element, and need not be placed on the nodal lines. The vibration characteristics are discussed and the results are compared with those available in the literature. Numerical results are presented for a range of cutout to plate size from 0 to 0.8.
