The Width of a Fairway - Comparison of Models

This article presents probabilistic and deterministic methods of safe waterway width assessment. The models were used to obtain optimal parameters of different type waterways. An analysis of results will be conducted to determine possible applications of the proposed methods.

Abstract

The article presents specially developed methods for optimizing of parameters of the proposed maritime container port in Świnoujście with planned transshipment capacity of 1.5-million TEU intended for handling container vessels up to 400m length. The methods have been developed based on a system approach for the proposed maritime waterways.

Location of an LNG Terminal on the Polish Coast — Optimal Solution

This article, using a comparative method, estimates navigational and economic risks concerning shipping routes and associated two variants of the terminal location on the Polish coast. The estimated risks specifically refer to LNG tanker passages to and from the planned terminal. The location variants were compared and the optimal solution was indicated.

Abstract

The paper presents a method of recommended waterway parameters determination, based on modified relationships derived from actual empirical research - the authors’ combination of PIANC and Canadian deterministic methods and stochastic relationships). These relationships are mostly discontinuous functions (e.g. of ship type variable, speed, method of determining the position, etc.), which can be approximated by continuous spline functions. Application built in C# allows determining the recommended minimum width of the waterway, the width increase due to the accuracy of the vessel positioning method, and the minimum radius of waterway bends. The results can be further utilized in the Decision Support System for Water Transport Safety.

Analysis of Simulation Visualizations of Shipš Traffic

In the article the problem of comparison and compatibility of the results of simulation research have been conducted on various simulators of ship's traffic with two different methods of visualization (types of visualizations) is being examined. In both cases the similar mathematical model of ships' traffic has been applied which had been verified by the methods used in marine traffic engineering. The research have been conducting on the new designed LNG terminal in Świnoujście.

Abstract

The article presents a method of scaling up existing simulation tests results from ships with parameters L1, B1 (length and breadth) determining a safe waterway bend width (d1) to specify a width (d2) safe for ships with other dimensions L2, B2. This method enables accurate determination of the safe fairway width (d) in case it has been planned to increase maximum length and width of vessels without carrying out relatively expensive simulation tests. The method was used in designing the parameters of the modernized Swinoujscie-Szczecin fairway.

Abstract

This paper describes the state vector of safe ship operation on sea waterways. The author determines relationships between the state vector of safe ship operation and parameters of sea waterway system elements. These include three subsystems: area, navigation and traffic control. These relationships have been exemplified with the 68-kilometre Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway, presently under reconstruction. A systematic approach to sea waterway design is globally unique.

Abstract

The article defines a system of sea waterways and discusses general principles of modeling such systems. Conditions for safe operation of marine waterway systems are specified. The author's model of waterway parameter optimization herein presented was used in designing a system of approach channels leading to the outer port in Świnoujście, the LNG terminal.

Abstract

The article presents a systematic approach to studying sea waterways. Relations between the parameters of sea waterway system elements and the conditions of safe ship operation are determined. Principles of formulation of the simulation experiment research process in the sea waterway system design process at the preliminary and detailed design stages are defined.
