Monogenean parasites of Lepomis gibbosus Linnaeus introduced into the River Durance, France

Summary

The pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus Linnaeus (Centrarchidae), was introduced into the Europe from North America in late 19th century. In this study, we examine monogenean parasites of L. gibbosus from the River Durance in France. We found seven parasite species introduced together with the host: Actinocleidus recurvatus, A. oculatus, Onchocleidus similis, O. dispar, O. acer, Cleidodiscus robustus (Ancyrocephalidae) and Gyrodactylus macrochiri (Gyrodactylidae). Early diporpa (Diplozoidae), accidentally attached to the gills, represent a single parasite species acquired within the area of introduction. Three species, O. acer, C. robustus and G. macrochiri, are reported from Europe for the first time.

Introduction of Gyrodactylus perccotti (Monogenea) into Europe on its invasive fish host, Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii, Dybowski 1877)

Abstract

Monogenean parasites of Amur sleeper Perccottus glenii introduced to Europe during the last century were studied during two seasons in the Wloclawski Reservoir (Poland). Introduction of a single species Gyrodactylus perccotti with its host was confirmed in both seasons: autumn 2006 and spring 2008. Occurrence of G. perccotti in Europe was reported for the first time. Intensity of infection decreased from 2006 to 2008, but the prevalence did not differ between the seasons. G. perccotti sampled in autumn 2006 showed low morphometrical variability and high morphological similarity with parasites collected in host native range, Amur River. In contrary, high morphological and metrical variability was found within the samples collected in spring 2008. Nucleic acid sequencing of the partial ITS rDNA confirmed that despite the variation in morphology or size of haptoral hard parts, all studied Gyrodactylus specimens belonged to the same species (G. percotti) and no intraspecific variation was detected.

First report of metacercariae of Cyathocotyle prussica parasitising a fish host in the Czech Republic, Central Europe

Summary

Examination of western tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris) from the River Dyje (Czech Republic, Danube basin) for metazoan parasites revealed the presence of metacercariae of Cyathocotyle prussica Mühling, 1896 (Digenea: Cyathocotylidae) in both muscle tissue and the peritoneal cavity. This is the first time that tubenose gobies have been reported as an intermediate host for C. prussica, and the first time that C. prussica metacercariae have been registered parasitising fish hosts in the Czech Republic. Here, we describe the morphology of metacercariae and five-day preadults, cultivated in vitro, and discuss the importance of recently established, non-native species as suitable hosts for this parasite.

Dactylogyrids (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) from Sudanese Labeo spp., with a description of Dogielius sennarensis n. sp. and a redescription of Dogielius fl osculus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1989

Abstract

Dactylogyrid monogeneans of Labeo horie Heckel, 1847 and L. niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cyprinidae) were surveyed at two sites on the River Nile in Sudan. The present study reports the presence of ten species of Dactylogyrus Diesing, 1850 and three species of Dogielius Bychowsky, 1936 based on a morphometric evaluation of the sclerotised structures. The species found include: Dactylogyrus nathaliae Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988; D. rastellus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988; D. retroversus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1988; D. senegalensis Paperna, 1969, D. yassensis Musilová, Řehulková & Gelnar, 2009 and five other undescribed species of Dactylogyrus. The genus Dogielius was represented by Dogielius flosculus Guégan, Lambert & Euzet, 1989; the newly identified D. sennarensis n. sp., and one undescribed Dogielius species. While D. sennarensis n. sp. resembles D. intorquens, it differs from this species and other congeners by having a longer ventral bar and anchor points and nosclerotised vagina. In addition, this study redescribes D. flosculus based on the morphology of specimens collected from L. horie. All specimens studied had a single large vagina, in contrast to the original description which reported a vagina composed of two unconnected parts. All dactylogyrid species in this study represent new host and geographical records.
