Abstract

Thanks to recent progress in foetal imaging, it is now possible to detect many anatomical defects at earlier gestational age. To illustrate the importance of prenatal diagnosis and the impact of extracardiac congenital anomalies we presented the cases of sibling with prenatal diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and post-mortem diagnosis of adrenal hypoplasia.

Prenatal diagnosis was made in one mother twice, in two subsequent pregnancies, respectively at 22 and 18 weeks gestational age. The mother-to-be was referred to specialist foetal echocardiography because of suspected image of the heart. After the diagnosis was made, future parents were thoroughly informed about prognosis and possible management and decided to continue pregnancy, and treat a newborn, despite the fact that the foetal defect was diagnosed subsequently. The two newborns underwent surgical treatment and no complications occurred during the surgery. The children died after Norwood operation among the symptoms of acute adrenal failure. In post-mortem examination of the younger, the severe adrenal hypoplasia was identified.

Prenatal diagnosis enables to make informed, conscious decisions at appropriate gestational age. Detection of congenital heart defect should incline an ultrasonographer towards searching for extracardiac lesions, which might significantly influence prognosis and surgical outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose. The aim of the study was to check whether and to what extent leisure-time physical activity and commuting activity constitute a factor differentiating physical fitness in a selected group of females and males aged 20-59 years. Methods. The study was performed in the Świętokrzyskie region of Poland in the spring of 2010. The sample included 1032 adults (517 females and 515 males) employed and at the same time completing extramural education or attending vocational improvement programs. Four age groups were delineated (20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-59). A self-report questionnaire assessed physical activity level whereas physical fitness was determined by tests assessing handgrip strength, upper (dynamic) and lower (explosive) extremity strength, agility, hand movement speed, and endurance. Results. A significant relationship was found between leisure-time physical activity and all the performance-based measures in both females and males. With regard to commuting activity, statistically significant relationships were observed only in the females with regard to handgrip strength, lower extremity strength and endurance. Conclusions. A significant positive relationship between leisure-time physical activity and physical fitness was demonstrated in both females and males aged 20-59 years while commuting activity should significant correlations only in females.

Abstract

Introduction. The aim of the study is to assess the physical activity of adults residing in the Świętokrzyskie region in Poland with relation to age, gender, and socioeconomic factors such as the level of education, place of residence, and financial situation.

Material and methods. The survey questionnaire used to assess physical activity was prepared by the Department of Auxology of Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce. The study group involved a total of 1,032 persons, aged 20-59 years, including 517 women and 515 men. The results of the study were subjected to statistical analysis. Two tests were carried out to determine the correlations between variables: Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was calculated and the nonparametric chi-square test (x2) was used.

Results. It was found that the leisure-time physical activity of the adults residing in the Świętokrzyskie region who participated in the study was insufficient and remained at a low level. Particularly alarming is the fact that a low level of leisure-time physical activity was found for young persons, both male and female, aged 20-39 years. This low level of activity also prevailed in the older age groups. Apart from age, gender, and the level of education, the place of residence and financial situation significantly impacted the physical activity of the adults.

Conclusions. It was observed that the physical activity of men and women aged 20-59 years in their leisure time was the greater the bigger the size of the agglomeration they resided in, the higher their level of education, and the better their financial situation.

Abstract

The problem of DNA sequence assembly is well known for its high complexity. Experimental errors of di erent kinds present in data and huge sizes of the problem instances make this problem very hard to solve. In order to deal with such data, advanced efficient heuristics must be constructed. Here, we propose a new approach to the sequence assembly problem, modeled as the problem of searching for paths in an acyclic digraph. Since the graph representing an assembly instance is not acyclic in general, it is heuristically transformed into the acyclic form. This approach reduces the time of computations significantly and allows to maintain high quality of produced solutions.

Abstract

The article presents state of work in technology of free-space optical communications (Free Space Optics − FSO). Both commercially available optical data links and their further development are described. The main elements and operation limiting factors of FSO systems have been identified. Additionally, analyses of FSO/RF hybrid systems application are included. The main aspects of LasBITer project related to such hybrid technology for security and defence applications are presented.
